Just checking - Ara Lois

Hiya

I'm a kiwi (as per my user name) and Ara in Maori means pathway. It's meaningful to my husband and I, and we both love it. Lois was my beloved grandmother's name. Just checking with the international audience. Is there any reason why we shouldn't use Ara as a first name? Some unknown meaning? I'd hate to find out it meant 'heap of manure' in persian, for example.

Thanks

I like Lois a lot. Ara is a perfectly nice name, and if it's meaningful to you then it's a great choice!
Nothing weird about it at all

As long as you don't use them as a double barrelled name - they do look a bit like a naughty anagram together at first sight. But no, both are nice individually.

I quite like it - friend of mine has Aroha as their daughter's middle name after spending time in NZ and falling in love with the maori culture

it sounds like a make of pram (sorry!)

ooops just read op properly - the meaning is lovely and i can so no reason why you shouldn't use it!

Wiki gives these possible meanings for Ara. Nothing awful If the name has meaning then that's extra special, and it's pretty enough as is. I like Lois. And congratulations on your impending/recent birth!

I went to school with a male Ara, so I would assume Ara was a boy - not sure if it is generally a name used by either gender, or if that bothers you?

OzKate · 01/04/2010 13:07

I'm sorry but the first thing I thought of when I read that was Areola, but that could just be me, and the fact that mine seem to get bigger by the day and they're all I can think about! Apologies. I love Lois.

catinthehat2 · 01/04/2010 13:16

Thought Ara was a made up name (my only reservation)but your explanation has made me do a 180 turn, really like it.

BessieBoots · 01/04/2010 13:19

I like the name! BUT- The Welsh for slow is araf, often shortened to ara'. You'd pronounce it arra though, not ah-rah as I presume you'd call your DD.
I wouldn't let it put me off. It's a lovely name.

DinahRod · 01/04/2010 13:20

Like bow and arra?

Like the meaning.
