Caspar or Cassius?

I see there's a thread on the name Cassius already, which has made me wonder which of these two names I prefer. I had been set on Caspar, but I know it's still quite heavily associated with the friendly ghost, which seems incredible given that it was a cartoon back in the seventies. People don't associate Tom with Thomas The Tank Engine, Ben with Ben 10 or Rory with a racing car, so why do some names get permanently stuck with their cartoon counterparts?

Anyhow, Caspar or Cassius, it would be interesting to see which one comes up tops with you discerning lot!

ps i know loads of you are going to hate them both!!!

Casper. I don't think of the ghost because I know of one roughly my age. Cassius has grown on me since I first heard it. so that's not much help.

I used to think of mohammed ali when I heard the name cassius and now I think of lockets! so i'd say its image is shifting.

Depends which association you're more comfortable with, the friendly ghost or mohammed ali. I wouldn't let either bother you though. I don't consider a name unusable just because there is a character from a film with that name..

Just glanced at CC's file on Wiki, and his middle name is Marcelius! I kind of like that too. Bit on the long side, but it's got a lot of roman gravitas ! Marcus would probably suit a son of mine better tbh, but I can imagine the child of two confident extroverts pulling this one off.

Just to confuse you even further: what about Cassian (celtic version of Cassius)

senua · 28/03/2010 13:27

Ah, just read the other thread which already mentions Cassian.
I'll get me coat.

varmit · 28/03/2010 13:36

Interesting Maggie, I hadn't even made the Cassius Clay connection in my head, I will now though!!!

Cassian is nice too senua, and there's a Caspian at my DS's nursery, which is interesting.

Think I'm sticking with Caspar. But lets see some either or verdicts from you lot please.........

Caspian is nice (Narnia character).
So is Caspar (apparently the Dutch form of Jaspar, one of the Magi)

Let make it simple: call him Caspar Cassius Varmitson.

Cassian/Cassius was what we had chosen for DD3 had she been a boy

much nicer than Casper/Caspar imo

VermontMama · 28/03/2010 14:50

I'm not sure I prefer either. The -sper names are intriguing but always sound light and whispery for boys names. Cassius... I know someone who just named their boy Cassius and at 10 days old, already calling him "Cash" which I think is horrible. I like the name but in this day, it sounds a little try-too-hard.

diddl · 28/03/2010 15:00

Casper.

LetThereBeRock · 28/03/2010 15:33

I love Caspar.

CirrhosisByTheSea · 28/03/2010 16:16

I love Caspar. Stylish. Cassius I find just desperately try-hard and pseudo.

well you ARE notorious around these parts for you're try too hard attutude

all well here thank you, if a little tired and wondering how the clock change will affect the sleeping tonight

JosephineClaire · 29/03/2010 09:35

I LOVE Caspar (and I would spell it with an 'a' too)

It's high on my list, but unfortunately by Mum and Nanna hate it...and their opinion means a lot to me.

Perhaps I should stop asking them(!)

varmit · 29/03/2010 11:41

Nice to see that Caspar, with an 'a', gets quite a few votes!

I know what you mean Josephine, it can really throw you when friends and family are negative about your name choices. I decided this time around to tell nobody, apart from the several hundred anonymous women on here of course!

I just have to persuade DH that Caspar's 'the one' now. Not easy when he prefers Max!

Caspar is a correct spelling - it is one of the names attributed to one of the Three Wise Men (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biblical_Magi). It probably slightly edges over Cassius unless he got the nn Cass I suppose.

CrankyTwanky · 30/03/2010 09:56

I had this exact predicament! DS was born in December and we thought Caspar after the Magi of the same name or Cassius after the boxer.
Went for something else Roman in the end, that is my father's/g'father's name. No help, sorry, but I'd go for Cassius, and keep Caspar for if you have a son around Christmas. (Although I'm not religious )

Celly2010 · 30/03/2010 11:03

I think you should go with Casper!!!!!!
But then I'm biased. my 6 month old is called Casper.
Good name. Anyone who tells you that the name you have chosen is horrible has probably called their child something really boring

CakeandRoses · 13/06/2010 01:09

Varmit - would love to know what you've decided...

Celly2010 - what reaction do you get to the name Casper (if you work out what people honestly think?)

We're pretty much decided on Caspar if DC2 is a boy. I love it so much that I sometimes worry I've got no perspective on it and we're going to saddle him with a name that lots of people will really dislike!

tummytickler · 13/06/2010 10:47

Caspar.

LadyThompson · 13/06/2010 12:56

Cassius is absolutely lovely. Caspar is nice, but as I am a sucker Roman names (so elegant), Cassius gets my vote.

audley · 14/06/2010 20:13

My 11 day old is Caspar, the few people we told were negative about it before he was born. Now he is here the people are either v. positive or don't comment! I am totally happy with our choice. My mum didn't approve at all but now is very proud to introduce him.
