Opinions Needed Please

Hi

Although I am newly pregnant (7 weeks) dp and I have started talking about names. One of the names he has come up with is Reginald, which in itself I'm not massively keen on but do really really like the nn Reggie. It also goes well with dp's surname.

So far all the opinions I have had have not been favourable, so I am looking for a wider field to see if this is still the case. It's not a name we've definitely decided on so am very open to your thoughts.

Not keen - think of Reginald Perrin or Reggie Kray TBH. Congrats on the baby though

I'm afraid all it brings to my mind is Kray or Perrin. Neither good associations for a small boy.

My own GP was a Reg, that's not so bad I suppose but not keen.

I find it quite a pompous sort of name, it reminds me of old soldiers, lawyers, people from the British Legion, perhaps with a handlebar moustache that speak with a plum in their mouth. I can't imagine a baby called Reginald.

Reggie is a little better, although it still has the Kray twins connection which might put you off.

What other names do you like?

I thought these might be the opinions. Dp really likes it, but I might just have to break it to him gently that this baby won't be a Reginald.

Thomas (Tommy/Tom)
Edward (Ted/Ed)
Harry (dp doesn't like)

Girls names:

Florence (Florrie), but I am worried about popularity boom in this one
Iris
Harriet (dp is unsure about this)
Cicely

Reginald is like Reginald D Hunter, that really annoying comedian.

Harry is getting popular now but if that doesn't bother you it's lovely.
I haven't heard many saying they like Florence but it is really nice, and Florrie is beautiful.

Is it traditional names you are going for?

Edward (I love Teddy) for a boy and either Iris or Cicely for a girl.

Reg is a great name, I would use it.

I changed DS2's name from Theodore to Reginald(which was already his middle name, after both my grandads) a couple of months ago after weeks of deliberation and some v. constructive input from MNers, and it was definitely the right decision. It's a family name for us and I love it. He gets called Reggie or Reg most of the time and I have to say, as he looks like a little old man, it really does suit him (and it goes well with siblings + surname). We've had some lovely comments from friends (those who are not keen - we knew it would divide opinion, but that's never bothered me) have remained tactfully silent! It's a tricky thing to decide 100% on a name before the baby actually arrives, as sometimes they genuinely suit certain names over others. Maybe keep Reginald on your shortlist and wait + see what your little one looks like? Good luck with the pregnancy!

I know a little boy about 5 called Reggie - I thought it is a really cool name, didn't think about the krays atall.

Also like Sidney, Lenny and Ernie for names htat kind of have that feel & sound.

Cicely and Florence are both gorgeous. Florrie is a lovely nn too, as is Sissy. Reginald still sounds a bit odd - but these things chenge quickly (witness Wilfred...I never would have thought that would 'turn around').
