ttc baby that will be 1/4 Jamaican. At the moment feeling names of Jamaican people I've met over here (admittedly they are all 50-70 years old).

Anyone got some suggestions of some old-school Jamaican style names?

e.g. Locksley, Eastman, Lennox, Sheldon, Percy, Reginald, Cornell

Marley? Not technically a jamaican name I don't suppose, but refers to Jamaica in a roundabout way.

DD is half jamaican, I called her marley in reference to her heritage

The Jamaican/Caribbean heritage kids I know (quite a lot since I'm in South London) all seem to have either non-specific names (David etc), or names that I would think of as African American (Tyrese, Tiiana, Denyse), or names that go back to their African roots.
None have specifically Jamaican names, with the exception of Marley - which is rather A nice name IMO.
It would definitely be unusual to call a baby e.g. Desmond.

Dilys, I have lived in South London and now live in North so I've known a lot too! I mean a couple of generations older.

I love the name Blessing for a girl.

MrsDippers · 14/03/2010 20:44

LeroyRedbin is a good Jamaican name.

MinnieMalone · 14/03/2010 20:51

Thinking of the old school Jamaicans I have known (boys):

Ambrose
Delton
Conrad
Royston
Marvin
Elroy
Errol
Garnett (love that name)

Lots of Jamaicans I know have biblical names. Twelve tribes of Israel names - Levi, Judah, Issachar, Naphtali etc - popular.

Rindercella · 14/03/2010 20:52

Am LOVING Marley as a girl's name. Really shouldn't have opened this thread as DD2 will arrive any day (1/4 Jamaican heritage) and We. Have. Decided. On. Her. Name.

cordonbleugh · 14/03/2010 21:12

lol a lot of people don't realise that shes mixed race, especially through the winter as shes quite pale skinned in comparison to other mixed race complexions! Her afro kind of gives it away though!

I have to admit, I love DD's name, and it really suits her, but I would not have chosen it if she weren't half jamaican!

Go on Rindercella, you know you want to!!!

JJ6 · 14/03/2010 21:24

Jamaicans I have met here in Brixton:
Winsome, Doris, Ebenezer, Elroy, Winston, Gladstone, Ignateous, Vincent, leroy,

ette at the end of a name is quite common; Lynette, Claudette, Paulette
and ine e.g. Pearline, Claudeine,

I have met a few Blessings and they have not been one, a Comfort who was vile and a Charity that was downright corrupt!!(that is the problem with Virtue names)

Children tend to be of the new 'made up' or american type names:
Tyrese
Jamari
Jemahal
