I love Calista, it's such a lovely name and very unusual.

also like Eleanor,Grace, Harriet and Thea

bellissima · 08/03/2010 11:02

Well I have an Eleanor so love it. Like Grace as a first name. Like Susannah and Harriet and Esther.
Know lots of Emilys/Amelies/Emilias so wonder whether she might be in a class with at least one more. Prefer Tess to Tessa although, despite Thomas Hardy, both sound like nns (or was Tess a nn for something she says displaying her ignorance?). Not sure about Calista - reminds m of coffee bars. And Clementine reminds me of Oh My Darling.

CelticUnited · 08/03/2010 11:16

My favourites on your list are Emily, Grace, Clementine, Tessa

BessieBoots · 08/03/2010 11:19

Esther! Lovely!

Thea also- makes me think of the supercool Thea Gilmore...

nickelbabe · 08/03/2010 11:21

Emily - sweet, feminine
Eleanor (nn Ella - I know its not normal) -it is normal! lovely name, nice nn.
Grace - beautiful
Clementine (nn Clemmie) - not so keen on that
Thea - quite nice
Tessa - don't like this one
Calista (nn Callie) - mmmmm
Susannah (nn Susie OR Zannah) - ooh, like Zannah!
Esther - classic, strong
Harriet (nn Hattie) - not sure about Hattie, but Harriet is a beautiful name

Pasiphae · 08/03/2010 12:15

Emily: Sweet but too safe and popular.
Eleanor: Lovely, classic old British.
Grace: yeah but it is THE default middle name.
Clementine: My fav, so pretty but not too soft.
Thea: Ok, a bit blah...
Tessa: I like it. It's ok.
Calista: a bit "precious". I dislike Callie
Susannah Nice. 70s vibes.
Esther: Gorgeous
Harriet: Gorgeous as well.

ShowOfHands · 08/03/2010 12:18

Lots of too popular names there but love Esther and I also think of Thea Gilmore who is super cool.

ChoreDodgingHairyTrucker · 08/03/2010 12:36

Emily - very pretty but loads
Eleanor - good classic name. i like it but i don't love it.
Grace - I like Gracie as a fn, lots of people have the mn Grace but I don't know any with first name Grace.
Clementine - really don't like it. Clio for short?
Thea - lovely. Also like Alethea. Greek for truth
Tessa - no, reminds me of rosary bead clackers
Calista - no. Sounds like a disease. Callie is ok, bit 80s
Susannah - like it. Like Susie. Zannah is a bit puzzling.
Esther - I like it. Also like Estelle
Harriet - not crazy about it but it's a good classic name. I prefer Juliet which is in the same style I think.

3isthemagicnumber · 08/03/2010 13:21

Clementine and Esther- very lovely and the 2 that stand out.

LLJ4 · 08/03/2010 13:52

Emily - overused.
Eleanor nn Ella - lovely!
Grace - overused.
Clementine nn Clemmie - brave and kooky.
Thea - love it but as a nn for Dorothy or Theodora
Tessa - love it as nn for T(h)eresa
Calista nn Callie - makes me think of Ms Flockhart aka Ally McBeal.
Susannah nn Susie OR Zannah - like it but prefer nn Sukey.
Esther - ok but prefer Hester
Harriet nn Hattie - adore adore adore, have had to cross off our list as a colleague has just named his dd this. Grr.

Like Susannah, then Harriet, then Clementine best out of your list!

diddl · 08/03/2010 14:03

Harriet,
Eleanor,
like Ella as a name.
Have only ever known one & she was one of the nicest people I have ever known.

legallyblond · 08/03/2010 17:46

Ooohh, all good. I have the same misgivings as some of you - Emily = too popular and Calista = just not quite there, a but "much" I think.

Thanks, any more comments welcome!

Emily - nice enough but a bit standard... a decent name, can't really go wrong with it but some of the others are nicer

Eleanor (nn Ella - I know its not normal) - Eleanor is lovely! Ella is also cute but will probably be 1 of many in her class. What about Elsa as an alternative nickname? I think it's really pretty

Grace - Simple, pretty

Clementine (nn Clemmie) - Bit over the top for me... I think of Eternal Sunshine so it seems too much of a "character" name. Clemmie is a bit too cutesy too. It's not awful though

Thea - Ooh, really nice! Simple but definitely unusual, good choice

Tessa - Okay but can't get too enthusiastic about it. Have seen it on a few babies lately but still sounds a bit "old" to me

Calista (nn Callie) - Hmm not sure if it seems a bit "try hard" although it is pretty. Reminds me of Ally McBeal! Callie is sweet. Calista is better than Calliope anyway IMO!

Susannah (nn Susie OR Zannah) - Cute classic

Esther - Okay but prefer the others

Harriet (nn Hattie) - Harriet is one of my favourites too - really nice and classic but not too overused

I would go for Harriet, Eleanor or Thea!

janeiteisFedUp · 08/03/2010 19:51

Emily - nice
Eleanor (nn Ella - I know its not normal) - love Elinor
Grace - nah
Clementine (nn Clemmie) - hate this but most people love it
Thea - no
Tessa - no but like Tess
Calista (nn Callie) - nope
Susannah (nn Susie OR Zannah) - no feelings either way for this
Esther - okay but I LOVE Hester
Harriet (nn Hattie) - love it

Elinor (like that) is my fave, then Hester (like that!) or Harriet.
