Would you pronounce it Mee-la or Miller?

I have just found this name and love it for my mythical DD3. DH is worried it's too foreign sounding to go with our other DD's names (both ofvwhich see actual common in both the UK, Spain and Russia).

def meela and gorgeous.... we have one although spell it with 2 L's (debated the spelling but OH thought that people would be more likely to spell it right with the Milla Jovavich (sp?) connection.

Most people pronounce it right, some say miller but not a problem as when they have been told the proper way to pronounce it its fine.

We have always received lots of compliments on the name.

Mee-la.

mathanxiety · 06/03/2010 21:23

ooops. I love this name.

Reading this thread I suspect that there are at least two pronunciations that are "proper" probably depending on the background of the family. My niece is called Mila, and it is pronounced like Miller - her Dad is Australian, like Buda's friend. Personally I would have chosen a longer name (Camila being the obvious one, although a no-no in my family) and used Mila as the short version. Then the pronunciation is fairly obvious - as Camila is not Cam-ee-la, at least in the UK.

This is the second thread on this name in the last few months, with pretty much exactly the same debate as to pronunciation btw.

Milla/Miller pronounciation is much nicer imo.

my mum is called Mila and we pronounce it Mee-la. I think it originates from Ludmila although my Grandma dropped the Lud bit when she named my mum. No one says My-la by mistake but many have spelt it Meela.

StrictlyKatty · 07/03/2010 14:31

I would say Meela. I love it. Such a pretty sounding name.

Oquioqui · 07/03/2010 16:14

It does remind me of Miele appliances though.

ellesabe · 07/03/2010 16:35

I thought 'My-luh'

Lonnie · 08/03/2010 19:24

I would say Meela (as in the end of Camilla) and I think its pretty

lolalotta · 08/03/2010 19:34

I would pronounce it My-la!

mrsfred · 08/03/2010 19:37

DD1 has a Mila in her class, pronounced Mee-la.

Beachcomber · 08/03/2010 19:39

I live in France where this name exits as a not particularly common girls name.

Here it is pronounced 'Mee-Ya'.

JeMeSouviens · 08/03/2010 19:54

My childminder looks after one, her parents pronounce it Mee-la

hildegarde · 08/03/2010 21:00

I would say "Meela". I like it, though I can def see how a name that seems to be split 50/50 pronunciation-wise could be a pain.

FatSeal · 09/03/2010 10:13

Meela, and know a little one of that name. I thought it very weird at first, but it has grown on me.

hellokitty123 · 09/03/2010 11:50

I know a German girl called Mila and she pronounces it Mee-la. Lovely!

jeanjeannie · 09/03/2010 15:24

I'd pronounce it Mee-ya but I'd suspect there would be a lot of Miller...which is OK if you don't mind that.
