I was thinking that names like
Alma, Daphne and Shirley may be the next to be revived since they're fairly old-fashioned and yet pretty.

Any other suggestions?

Oh - my 4 year old wishes she was called Shirley!
I love Daphne and Alma also!

I think Angela, Susan, Frances, also feminised male names - Alberta, Roberta, Thomasina etc may rise quite a bit!
I am always surprised Angela is not more popular.

Linda, Belinda.

There has also been an awful lot of Ethel mentions on here lately, I wouldn't be surprised to see it rise up in the popularity stakes.

I think it might be a bit soon for Susan and Angela revivals - they're names from our generation.

Maybe names from our parents' gen, like Linda as already mentioned, Helen, Janet, Cynthia, Judith, Barbara, etc...

My DD says if she ever has a DD it will be called Agnes, which she and her friends agree is v. cool!

She is nearly 13.

daisyj · 27/02/2010 23:41

Ooh, I love Agnes (and the French pronunciation An-yess). Friend has just had a Betty, which I reckon is coming up. And there have been a few mentions of Margaret on MN recently.

belgo · 28/02/2010 10:36

More people trying to be 'original'

loobylu3 · 28/02/2010 11:07

Exactly belgo, everyone is trying to name their baby something 'different'.
I think there will be a few trends. Probably 'old lady/ man chic' will be the biggest initially. I love a lot of the girl's ones!

Agnes, Florence, Elsie, Iris, Ivy, Olive, Pearl, Opal, Agatha, Sylvia, Daphne, Nancy, Maude, Violet, etc
Albert, Arthur, Stanley, Gilbert, Wilfred

I think Brits will also pick up on some foreign imports eg. Elodie, Genevieve, Anastasia, Valentina, Otto, Luca (already fairly popular), etc

I think probably surnames as first names will become more popular slowly (American influence)- Mitchell, Grayson, jackson, etc. I don't like this trend myself!

Slightly more unusual Classic may come back such as Andrew, Peter, Helen, Clare, etc

Overall, it will become much more difficult to choose something unusual for your child

Bumperlicious · 28/02/2010 11:46

Is it a 'movement' of names or is it because of well known people I wonder? Agnes is probably going to be seen as more 'acceptable' because of the model Agnes Deyn of whatever he name is.

Florence is already gaining popularity I think.

I think part of it is, as with any fashion, the more familiar things become the more acceptable they seem. E.g. 3 years ago I though the trend for jeans tucked into boots was awful, a year later I joined the crowd not because it was 'fashionable', at least not consciously, but because it became more familiar.

In the same way I could never have imagined naming a baby Pearl or Agnes, but it's starting to not seem so odd.

tummytickler · 28/02/2010 12:32

Oh - and Arlo for a boy.
My 4 year old is Pearl and one of her best friends is Agnes!

sophiesmummie · 28/02/2010 21:24

Some lovely names on here, especially the 'old' names.

Personally I'm not quite ready for the 1960s/70s names yet .

kalo12 · 28/02/2010 21:28

i met an audrey the other day

MamaLazarou · 28/02/2010 22:04

Mabel, Dorothy, Blake, Connie, Bruce.

Nancy is LONG due a revival, IMO.
