I was thinking that names like
Alma, Daphne and Shirley may be the next to be revived since they're fairly old-fashioned and yet pretty.

Any other suggestions?

I predict that, as we're all becoming more environmentally-aware, the flowers and foliage will rule again for girls. Rosie, Holly and Jasmine have been popular for years and Jamie Oliver has Daisy and Poppy, so how about Iris, Livy, Lily etc?

I always fancied Twig for a boy... but what happens if he's massive?

LuciaRose · 05/03/2010 16:51

I predict that non-frilly, non-contrived names will make a comeback, like Susan, Mary, Jane, Ruth, Anne, Sarah. These are classic and timeless, but hardly ever used for babies today.

confusedfirsttimemum · 07/03/2010 17:41

Oh god, my secret DD2 (yet to be conceived. May never exist if we have boys) name is on this list.

Damn, damn. Don't mind popular, but don't want to be faddy.

Nearly named DD it and would have been ahead of the trend, but she just didn't look like the name.

pigleychez · 07/03/2010 19:06

Ive heard alot of Hannah,Sarah and Rebecca's born lately which seem to have dropped off the radar for a few years.

bridewolf · 07/03/2010 20:46

percy.

am sure thats gonna come back.

and dorothy

ugh, am sooo not keen on those names.

tummytickler · 07/03/2010 20:50

I dont think these names are all faddy though, confused. My dd's age 8 and 4 have their names on here, and also there are names like Mary, Elizabeth, Iris, Margaret, Jane etc. I would not call those faddy, but steadily used, not too popular, but well known.

confusedfirsttimemum · 08/03/2010 09:28

I know Tummy, I think it's a classic name I'm thinking of too.

I suppose my point is that I don't want to pick a name which makes people think "oh, so you were born around 2010 then." Like Olivia is a beautiful name, and previously quite rare. It was on my list, but I just didn't want a name which had shot so massively up in the popularity stakes in the few years around DD1s birth. I wouldn't have had a problem with, say Sarah or Elizabeth, which have always been popular.

Does that make sense?

gagamama · 08/03/2010 09:59

I reckon 20s and 30s names - June, Jean, Audrey, Gladys, Wilfred, Percy, that kind of thing.

tummytickler · 08/03/2010 10:44

confused - i know what you mean - I always worry mine might sound a bit 2000's - I hope not though (they are Iris and Pearl).
I like Mildred for dc5 but that is on here too! (although I find it hard to imagine Mildred being top 10 as it is not as obviously pretty as Hazel/Violet/Olivia etc)
What are you thinking of - will you tell? .

Gagamama - I really agree with Percy, and I thought Audrey would have come back years and years ago, especially as it is so popular in America. I LOVE Jean and Gladys.
My poor kids are all going to end up with the Claire and Melanie names of the 2010's!

tummytickler · 08/03/2010 10:58

I also think Atticus is going to be much more widely used.

bibbitybobbityhat · 08/03/2010 11:01

Yes, Daphne absolutely. Its already in the air.

Dorothy

Lucien

confusedfirsttimemum · 08/03/2010 11:35

Tummy - Iris and Pearl are lovely. I think that they are still rare enough not to sound time specific.

The name I was thinking of is Margaret. The problem is, it does have the potential to go 'number 1' again. It has in the past. I think it was only Thatcher that kept it down for so long...

mopsyflopsy · 08/03/2010 14:37

Some lovely names on this thread. I also think that the 'old' 'elegant' names are making a comeback:

Florence
Mabel
Margaret

Vincent
Quentin
Clement

I love them all .

tummytickler · 08/03/2010 15:38

I love Margaret! Dh says no because of Thatcher though - so many nice nn!

Indith · 08/03/2010 15:49

I have a Margaret I've also seen ds' middle name on this thread (Gilbert). I love the good old, solid, traditional names. I'd love an Arthur if we have another boy (disclaimer-sometime in the future if dd ever sleeps and my fantasy of having more children ever turns into actual broodiness).

confusedfirsttimemum · 08/03/2010 17:30

Oh no. It's sooooo on the up isn't it?

There were only 79 Margarets registered in the whole of England and Wales in 2008 (plus 192 Maggies), so I really thought it was quite rare. It's going to be another Olivia/Grace isn't it....

tummytickler · 09/03/2010 08:59

confused - I really don't think so - it may get more popular as it has so many great nn (Peggy being my personal fav !), but I do think there are too many Thatcher haters out there still for it to really take off again, maybe more so down south.

Indith · 09/03/2010 10:47

Mine gets Daisy at the moment, I love Meg though. We never considered Thatcher at all when we decided, our parents were quick to point it out though, especially as our surname is her maiden name! I don't think it matters though, for our age group she is well known obviously but not really in the present if that makes sense.

confusedfirsttimemum · 09/03/2010 11:58

Hhhhm. I'm a Londoner so maybe there's less connection down here.

Of course, will probably have boys now, if and when we have more...

jeanjeannie · 09/03/2010 15:30

Already know a Pery, Wilf and Bert - both under 1yr. Have a friend toying with Horace as a possibility.

Audrey is quite popular ATM as is Jean (poor thing!!) Love Nancy - and we've already had a Mnetter call her DD Lettice - so it must getting popular!

Other popular old names belonging to friend's kids include
Dulcie
Emmeline
Elsie
Theodora

LeXyLovess · 09/03/2010 22:11

Def names from the 20's/30's.. My DD is a Constance (Connie for short)

Im stuck for a name for my little girl due in just over 4 weeks.. But I like the sound of Nancy now ive seen it written down MamaLazarou

xx

gagamama · 10/03/2010 10:22

Constance is lovely!

Can also see Winifred/Winnie increasing if Wilfred/Wilf becomes popular.

loobylu3 · 10/03/2010 19:45

confused- Margaret is lovely. I can't see it becoming v popular in the near future and it i such a classic name anyway.
I love a lot of the names on this thread, Daphne especially so a bit to see so many people think it is on the up++

confusedfirsttimemum · 11/03/2010 18:35

Great, now I just need to get back to work to 'earn' the maternity pay I've already had, get DD to sleep enough to contemplate pregnancy, find the energy to actually do the necessary deed and conceive a girl.

But it's good to know the name's sorted .
