What do you think of Rafe?

I have just found out I'm having a boy, my dp has suggested Rafe, I like it but I'm not 100% sure, my other ds's are Harry and Freddie, quite plain names, I suppose I'm just concerned Rafe is a bit too different compared to their names!

All opinions welcome

I like it but would assume you had spelled it wrong as I've only ever seen it spelled Ralph.

AllieW · 25/02/2010 14:29

I like the pronunciation but prefer the spelling Ralph. If you tell people as in Ralph Fiennes there shouldn't be a problem.

cloelia · 25/02/2010 15:31

round here, a pretty small place, there are four I can immediately think of, aged 20, 14, 11, 7. a rash of Rafes. I like it , either spelling.

Aduby · 25/02/2010 15:47

My godson is called Rafe, I love the name and he is the only one I have come across to date.

probono · 25/02/2010 15:53

Rafe isn't right, definitely should be Ralph. Which is charming. Rafe looks like you don't know. Heaven forfend.

dingledangle · 25/02/2010 15:57

The name is spelt Ralph and can be pronounced either way. However, I expect he would probably have a life of it being pronounced Ralph not Rafe.

Bit of an albatross of a name imo!

Sorry....

probono · 25/02/2010 15:59

depends on the circles you move in dingle

i know one who is constantly having to say, no, it's not Rafe..

MaMight · 25/02/2010 16:14

If I met a Rafe I would assume that his parents were trying for a posh name but had spelt it wrong. Bit embarassing for him really.

I love it, but agree with the others, would spell it Ralph, pronounce it Rafe.

We have ummmed and ahhhed over it for ages, but have decided against, purely because of the said one way, spelt another thing.

happywheezer · 25/02/2010 16:36

I thought Rafe was short for Raphael, which is really lovely. Macho, Handsome.
Ace name.

bibbitybobbityhat · 25/02/2010 16:37

I love the name Ralph pronounced Ralph not Rafe. Don't like the Fiennes pronounciation, sorry.

notsoteenagemum · 25/02/2010 16:46

Seeing it spelled Rafe makes me want to rhyme it with Cafe, I prefer Ralph pronounced Ralf not Rafe and think it goes well with you'r other Ds's names.

minipie · 25/02/2010 16:48

Ralph or Rafe - not keen. Ralph is too Judy Blume-associated and Rafe is too wet.

Raf or Raph (short for Rafael/Raphael) - great

RoseWater · 25/02/2010 16:48

Agree with probono and mamight

QueenMercury · 25/02/2010 19:12

I knew something wasn't right about that name when he suggested it to me, it didn't look right but I didn't realise it was spelt Ralph . I really don't like Ralph pronounced Ralf, or Rafe, as he will forever be explaining his name, oh well I guess I'll have to keep looking. I really hope my dp doesn't insist on this name now as the final decision is his this time round!

Like it but agree spelt Ralph. Obv would mean explanin how to pronounce it to some people which would be a bit of a bore. I have a 13 week old with a name that some people do not know how to pronounce. I knew that would be the case though.

Kingsroadie · 25/02/2010 20:12

Woops - just seen your post OP - ignore me!

deaddei · 25/02/2010 20:18

Rafe conjures up pale young Englishman, whoambles through life living on trust fund.
Sorry, personally it's in the same league as Rupert and Jonty.

Flightattendant · 25/02/2010 20:22

Sorry but isn't it anatomically rather, erm,

I mean it's part of the penis or something isn't it?

Flightattendant · 25/02/2010 20:23

erk

theminniebobble · 25/02/2010 20:31

Ralph pronounced Rafe is my dad's favourite name. He was gutted that we didn't call DS that. I think that it's what John Simpson's son is called.

Ralph pronounced as it's written is the name that one of the characters gives to his willy in Judy Blume's "Forever." A book that was strictly banned at my convent-esque school but never failed to cause a frisson of excitement! I don't think that I could go with the name for that reason.

redwhiteandblue · 25/02/2010 20:53

If I'd had a ds would have called him Rafe - love it

Would not have called him Ralph pronounced however because of the Judy Blume connotations

I automatically think of talking to Ralph on the big white phone.
