Rachel

I really like the name Rachel for a girl but when I tell people that's my chosen name they look a bit disappointed and my brother actually said I could do better than that.

I do like the popular names of the moment - Isabelle, Ruby, Amelie etc. But I wanted a classic name that wasn't trendy or too old fashioned and I think Rachel is a name that fits this.

I also want a name that wouldn't "limit" my daughter in the sense that whichever profesion she chooses her name will be acceptable in that field.

It's probably due to become trendy again isn't it? I like it.

And it makes me think of Rachel from Friends.

LilyBolero · 25/02/2010 14:08

I think it's a lovely name!

MrsBadger · 25/02/2010 14:09

love it too, was on shortlist for dd

in fact I had a whole 'short classic names for girls' thread and got some corking suggestions

consider also Helen, Chloe, Alice, Fiona, Emma, Laura. Hannah, Ruth

LaTrucha · 25/02/2010 14:15

Lovely.

mathanxiety · 25/02/2010 14:37

It never went 'out' in Ireland. It's a gorgeous name, imo.

AllieW · 25/02/2010 14:40

I quite like it, but spelt Rachael. Equally, there's always Rachelle (pn with a soft ch).

AshleyFanjo · 25/02/2010 19:32

Thank you all! I shall stick with my choice and thank you for the link Mrs Badger.

It's lovely. As mathanxiety says, it is more popular for younger girls in Ireland. It's pretty and strong and as there aren't many babies called Rachel in the UK right now, so if you live in the UK, it's a good choice. You can't really guess the age of a Rachel.

choosyfloosy · 26/02/2010 10:49

It's lovely - ds would have been Rachel if a girl; it was dh's choice and it actually took me a little time to get into it IYSWIM, but I really did after a while. I'm glad you're not going to let other people's thirst for novelty affect your beautiful choice

weegiemum · 26/02/2010 10:51

Yes Yes Yes!!!!

Weegiegirlie (dd2) is Rachel (after her Great Grandma who died 2 weeks before she was born, but we loved it already). Her middle name is Jessie (after other Great Gran).

Its timeless, classic, unlimiting, pretty, feminine but also strong, I think.

But I love these "under-appreciated" girls names - dd1 is Katherine.

Cobblers · 26/02/2010 10:53

I love it, it's a classic.

RachieB · 01/03/2010 21:38

It's a lovely name ;)

mummyofexcitedprincesses · 01/03/2010 21:48

I love it too. I like the Rachael spelling best, but it works anyway, classic, timeless.

dizzydixies · 01/03/2010 21:49

I know of loads and its not to my taste, I don't think its a classic by any means but a name made popular by Friends etc

and I hate hate hate the nn Rach, harsh and unattractive sounding

Tummum · 01/03/2010 21:50

I love it. Classic, classy, girlie, but not too girlie. (My DD2 has middle name Rachael, after the MW who delivered her.)

WinkyWinkola · 01/03/2010 21:52

It's a beautiful name. I prefer the simpler Rachel to Rachael.

DeeDon · 02/03/2010 09:45

Lovely, timeless name - my DD1 is Rachel Elisabeth & it really suits her.

skihorse · 02/03/2010 10:29

It's a beautiful Hebrew name and on our list.

henry37 · 02/03/2010 10:32

i was going to be a rachel until my dad decided on a much more trendy 70s name always wish they had stuck to rachel its a classic.

ArcticFox · 02/03/2010 12:11

There is no better name..........but possibly I am a bit biased for reasons I will not confirm

HappySeven · 02/03/2010 12:48

It's top of our list if this baby turns out to be a girl and I know what you mean about the look you get when you say it. My only worry now is that if it becomes as popular as suggested on your thread there may be hundreds in a couple of years and I was trying to avoid having a very popular name after being one of many HappySevens at school.

CinderellaRach · 02/03/2010 16:08

My name is Rachel and I'm glad it's not in the top 100 names! It's doesn't rhyme with anything and no one can really take the mickey out of it!Although I think it's nice spelt this way. When people write to me spelling my name 'Rachael' it grates on me-can't stand it!

jellybeans · 02/03/2010 16:20

It's OK, abit dull perhaps or 80s. DD has a friend called Rach, Raye for short.

jellybeans · 02/03/2010 16:20

Sorry, friend is Rachel not just Rach!

5DollarShake · 02/03/2010 17:46

Rachel is a lovely name.

I don't think it was made popular by Friends; they just gave the character a name from that generation.

I know several Rachel/Rachael's my age, and yet still like it. Most names of my gen I just think are very meh and too familiar.
