polly - will she get teased?

looking for a usable name that isn't so common. If I called her polly would she get teased because of polly put the kettle on and polly had a dolly etc???? One of my friends reckons so.

Maybe. My sister's a Holly.

Do you like Molly?

compo · 23/02/2010 22:00

Not much

I like it

Bigmouthstrikesagain · 23/02/2010 22:02

strange comment from a friend - i have a Polly and have only had positive reactions to the name - she is too young to to know if there will be teasing at school but i really don't think it is going to be a problem.

But I am from the school of thought that you keep your (negative) thoughts to yourself regarding name choices as (unless I had a friend who wanted to call their child 'poo', it would have to be that extreme!) then I would be in very difficult territory if they went ahead and used a name which I had openly criticised.

Maria2007loveshersleep · 23/02/2010 22:05

I'm not sure whether she would be teased or not, but if I'm honest I think Polly, although quite pretty, is perhaps a bit old-fashioned or a bit boring or...something. But go with what you like, children will tease about anything really, there's much worse you can do teasing-wise than Polly.

Horton · 23/02/2010 22:14

I think Polly is a lovely name. I can't see what's especially tease-worthy about those nursery rhymes, tbh.

Blanchet · 24/02/2010 12:53

Doubt it. Agree with Horton that there's nothing 'tease-worthy' about the rhymes for kids to pick up on. Putting kettles on, having a dolly, even Polly Pocket...kettles, dollies and pockets are probabbly pretty far from the minds of mischievous schoolchildren when they want to make fun of someone! I guess there's the parrot association, but even that I don't think is a big deal. Far worse if it rhymed with a rude word. Fwiw I think Polly's a lovely name.

Blanchet · 24/02/2010 12:58

in fact, just remembered I went to school with a little girl whose surname was Polly so she literally was "Miss Polly" like in the rhyme. I don't remember anyone making a big deal about it even though we used to sing the rhyme.

5DollarShake · 24/02/2010 13:12

So what if people do say 'Polly put the kettle on' - it's hardly scarred for life ribbing material, is it?

I'm Isobel and had 'Is a bell necessary on a bike' all through my childhood - big deal. It was annoying, but hasn't exactly had me in years of therapy!

Kids will pick up on something - probably something you least expect or anticipate.

ja9 · 24/02/2010 13:16

I don't think she'll get teased. It's a lovely name...

Hulababy · 24/02/2010 13:25

I don't think she'll get teased.

My DD is Mollie, and she loved it when we sang "Miss Mollie [instead of Polly] had a dolly" etc. And her great grandad always says Good Golly Miss Mollie.

Infact she was known as Miss Mollie for ages; still is a bit now at 7y.

bamboobutton · 24/02/2010 13:28

i'm a polly. everyone sang the kettle song etc and it never bothered me at all. i've never met another Polly either!

children can make a rhyme from almost any name.

TweedyneeCole · 24/02/2010 14:46

I love Polly. I wouldn't bother about a few nursery rhymes. They are cute, anyway.

Feierabend · 24/02/2010 14:48

Polly is an excellent name. Go for it.

SqueezyB · 24/02/2010 16:43

I have a 2-year-old Polly, so obviously I think it's a great name!

It's pretty and not too popular. I've never met another one. Obviously she's too young to get teased yet, but I don't see it being a problem - we sing Polly put the kettle on and Miss Polly had a dolly and she thinks they are all about her so she loves it!

My one annoyance is people always call her Poppy or Holly!

minipie · 24/02/2010 16:47

I went to school with a Polly, never saw her get teased for it.

brimfull · 24/02/2010 16:48

I'm a Polly , tis my nickname, never been teased about it.

gigismummy · 12/03/2010 16:50

gosh thanks people it's really good to have your feedback! Now polly is seriously on my shortlist
