Any Scottish mums out there, I need your help! Me and my DH have only ever had one name in mind if we have a boy. We both love Innes, but now I've just found out that there is a new character in Rivercity with that name so I need your opions please...would you even know the names of characters in Rivercity??! Would it put you off calling your baby that name?? I'm so torn, I LOVE the name, but don't want anyone to think that I'd called my child after a character in a soap!

Habbibu - DS has a lovely name how are you btw?

nickytwotimes · 28/02/2010 21:09

Perfectly good name, though don't like it myself. Have a real thing against surnames for forenames. (see Billy Connolly stand up about Campbell adn Findley). Never watch RIver Shitty, so no asssociations there for me.

lovechoc · 28/02/2010 21:16

I'm Scottish and never watched River City so don't know the character. It wouldn't affect me naming a child of mine after a character in a tv prog or soap though.

The only Innes I know is female and she is a friend of a friend. Nice name

MmeLindt · 28/02/2010 21:19

Never heard of River City and think the name is lovely.

Just before DS was born, a character on a German soap called their baby the name that we used for DS. I had no idea until one of the other mums in the hospital mentioned it. It was so weird that a German soap baby would be given a Scottish name. We had a couple of comments, to which I would reply that I had never seen the soap and then it was forgotten about, not been mentioned since.

I named one of my sons Innes,he is the only one around here, and we still like it.The was a racing driver named Innes Ireland

I'm not Scottish but I lived there for a few years. Never watched River City. Actually never heard of Innes as a boys name - it looks quite nice but I don't think there's a risk of it getting really popular just because it's in a soap. I have to admit I would think Innes was a girl though because I know a lot of girls called Ines with 1 n.

MaisietheMorningsideCat · 28/02/2010 22:00

Nobody watches River City up here, believe me! Innes is a fab name - underused imo.

Habbibu · 28/02/2010 22:04

(Fine, thanks, dizzy, if knackered. ds still feeding/sleeping like a newborn... How's the caff?)

Fimbow · 28/02/2010 22:11

I am Scottish but don't live in Scotland, have never heard of RiverCity.

I don't think it matters anyway.

My ds was born at the height of Coldfeet, we named him Adam his sister is Rachel.

Friends was at its peak when my dd was born and her cousin who is a similar age is called Ross. I use to holler across the park for them .

Scotia · 28/02/2010 22:18

Yes I watch River City - but I'm obviously uncool

Innes is a lovely name, and I don't see it being a stigma to have a ds with the same name as a character in a soap. It's not as if it's a made up name. If you really like it, you should use it.

dizietsma · 28/02/2010 23:22

No one watches River City. Innes is a lovely name, go for it.

Casmama · 28/02/2010 23:33

I wouldn't worry about River City but honestly have never heard of anyone other than middle aged women being called Innes.
Obviously people have different tastes and I'm not sure where in scotland you live but if it is in Glasgow I really wouldn't use this name.
Sorry not to be more supportive but I would worry about ds being bullied with that name. Others may think I'm barking though.

lovechoc · 01/03/2010 09:02

Personally I think of a woman when I hear the name 'Innes' because I've only known women called Innes. It is difficult for me to think of it as a boy's name.

Glad I'm not the only one of this thread who knows a woman called Innes! Was beginning to think I was alone there! Everyone else knows boys called Innes...

waitingforbedtime · 01/03/2010 09:04

Dont watch River City and love the name Innes.

whosinthere · 01/03/2010 09:11

Love the name Innes. Have never watched River City in my life. Don't know anyone who has.

I'm from Edinburgh.

macmam · 01/03/2010 11:10

Innes isn't a surname, it is a forename NTT, it's the angliscised pronounciation of Aonghas (Angus) - Innes....MacInnes is son of Angus...Very much a forename. Agree with Campbell/Cameron.... Finlay very much a forename too....
Love, love the name...

nickytwotimes · 01/03/2010 11:31

Actually love FInlay as a forename (twas my Dad's), but love that BC joke better.

poppeto · 01/03/2010 20:50

A girls name - really? I've never heard of any girls called Innes before.

I am from Glasgow though, so maybe I should stop worrying about River City and start worrying about the future bullies at school!

Inez is a spanish girls name - completely different to the Scots Innes for boys

Pingpong · 02/03/2010 06:59

I love the name Innes as long as surname is not MacInnes .
Wouldn't worry a bit about River City connection.

OhFuck · 02/03/2010 07:29

Anyone who matters won't know who the characters in River City are
