I really love Lois - oculdn't use it because our surname starts with an S and it's far too close to my first name, so people would assume we'd named our daughter after me - not good really.

Personally I am not keen on Stella. It is a pretty name, it's just that all the Stellas I have ever come across have been quite, erm, strange.

Thanks for all your opinions ladies - much appreciated.

Stella definitely - my best friend is a Stella and I would love to use that name but bean is due to be a boy. I love the meaning, I think it's pretty. Does have the unfortunate drink connection (up here Stella Artois is nn 'wife-beater') but depends what circles you mix in as to whether that would be a problem.

Lois I don't like at all, not sure why - I think American too, maybe the superman influence? I also think middle aged woman but obviously that's just me!

loobylu3 · 21/02/2010 10:56

I like both Stella and Lois.
Disadvantages:

Stella- association with Artois, sounds a little harsh perhaps..
Lois- v associated with Lois Lane- may cause a few jokes.

Do you like Hazel, Violet, Pearl, Kate, June?
These seem in a similar style to me and all v nice.

DuelingFanjo · 21/02/2010 10:57

I like Lois but only the welsh pronounciation ...loy-s

Blanchet · 21/02/2010 13:38

I love them both!

That's not much help, is it?

ChynaDoll2006 · 22/02/2010 09:06

Stella. Prefer Estella or Estelle but it's better than Lois.

Doozie · 22/02/2010 10:09

Stella - the drink connection isn't all bad. When my cousin had her little girl Stella they received crates of Stella Artois when she was born. Although nobody thought she'd been named after the beer - it was just a (celebratory) connection. Don't like Lois at all.

I love both these names and have considered them both too. I think I prefer Stella but only a little - maybe I am put off by the closeness of Lois to Louise which I am not as keen on (due to bitchy girl I once knew in school!) With Stella you can also have fun with middle names if you are into that kind of thing. Stella Skye for example!

Maleeka · 23/02/2010 15:47

Lovethesea, Stella is also nn "wife beater" round here too. Then again Lois instantly brings Family Guy into my head

stellabgh · 24/02/2010 21:00

Lois, it's lovely, but I like Stella too.

defineme · 24/02/2010 21:04

So jealous of Stella- dh vetoed it and I still feel I should have fought harder-dd is now 5! It's a star, it's brilliant, it's a strong lovely girl and a woman too.

persephoneplum · 25/02/2010 09:33

Stella is always going to win the popularity vote, but Lois is spunky and unexpected.

If our last name didn't start with L, it'd be in my top five for the next baby (the whole Lois Lane connotation).

MrsJohnDeere · 25/02/2010 09:40

Lois.

Don't like Stella at all.

birdofthenorth · 25/02/2010 10:55

I LOVE Lois. Would be one of my top choices if DH liked it too -the only reason he doesn't is he knows an adult Lois he finds v. annoying!
