Love Jesse, Toby and Lyra. Charlie and Felix are nice. Not mad about Elise, Erin or Isla.

Hulababy · 10/02/2010 15:30

I like Charlie as a nn for Charles. I also like Oscar.

I prefer Elise from your girl's names. Isla is fine too. I find Erin too harsh sounding, and not keen on Lyra.

BlueChampagne · 10/02/2010 15:30

Felix and Erin my favourites from your list.

MrsJohnDeere · 10/02/2010 15:34

Like Toby and Charles (but not Charlie).
Like Isla.

Not keen on the others.

cyteen · 10/02/2010 15:42

Oops sorry, forgot about Oscar! It's the name of MIL's cat so I can never again think of it without hearing 'Oskeeeeeee'

katiecubs · 10/02/2010 15:58

Thanks Ladies!

Always liked Toby but have reservations as surname would be Kirby - Toby Kirby - too twangy?!?

Like Charles nn Charlie
Like Jesse

Love Erin
Like Lyra

KeyOui · 10/02/2010 16:39

Charlie - bit overused and cutesy.
Felix - love it, it is a bit catty but cat's are cool.
Jesse - I like this, lots of people don't but I think Jesse James rather than 'yer big jesse'.
Oscar - nice, classic name.
Toby - meh & no good with Kirby.

Elise - no, sounds very of the moment and I think will date.
Erin - naff sorry, plastic Irish name when they're loads of lovely Irish names to use.
Isla - very nice.
Lyra - too close to Lycra, Lara is nicer.

Isla and Felix would be my picks.

GladioliBuckets · 10/02/2010 17:28

I like Felix, Erin and Lyra best (my dd is Lyra so I would say that)

katiecubs · 10/02/2010 17:55

Interesting most people seem to like Jesse and Felix - i love both of these but thought others may not, little bit out there for a boy!

Suprised that a few people also really dislike Erin i thought it was a pretty safe bet!

GladioliBuckets - i love Lyra such a pretty name for your DD. My only reservation with this is my niece is Lily and as this will only be the second grandchild Lily and Lyra might be a bit twee together

Felix and Lyra. Very lovely! I don't think Lyra is a problem with a cousin Lily.

Runners up: Jesse and Isla (KeyOui reminded me of the unfortunate "yer big jessie" saying). I actually think Lyra works better with Lily than Isla does - slightly tongue-twisty, not that I think it's a massive deal anyway since they're not siblings.

Also like Oscar.

Erin makes me think of Ireland so it strikes me as not-quite-right if there is no Irish link (obv I don't know if there is or not in your case!)... it also has a very modern feel which isn't especially my style. Elise a bit frilly (though I like Eliza). Toby not great with Kirby.

GladioliBuckets · 10/02/2010 18:22

Nah Lily and Lyra is nice.
Funnily, Felix was going to be Lyra's name if she'd been a boy. Don't know why I didn't use it on her little brothers.

sophiesmummie · 10/02/2010 21:49

From the boys list I only like Jesse - great name! Charlie and Toby are overdone and Felix just screams cat to me...

Girls - I like Elise and Lyra. Not keen on Erin (sounds a bit masculine)

AllieW · 12/02/2010 19:00

Love Felix, Oscar, Elise and Isla. If you have concerns over the surname, though, may I suggest Tobias as an alternative to Toby?

Not keen on Jesse, Biblical connections notwithstanding, because I tend to think it sounds quite girly. But a friend has named her son this (he's 8, I think) and he has no problems with teasing etc so it's probably just me.

Woofie · 14/02/2010 19:05

Love Oscar (but then I have one!) and ds2 who's on the way would probably be Felix if it weren't for the Odd Couple association! Also like Jesse - you have good taste in boys' names!

For the girls, I'm not v keen on Erin, but Lyra's OK, though was it invented by Phillip Pullman for His Dark Materials or is it an older name? Like Elise and Isla.

Good luck choosing!

janeite · 14/02/2010 19:09

Love Oscar and Toby. Hate felix and Jesse. Like Charles but not Charlie (which I always think sounds like an evil clown - sorry).

Love Elise and Lyra.

Tobias Kirby sounds fine.

katiecubs · 16/02/2010 14:10

Thanks All :-)

Woofie, Lyra is not an invented name it's an old Latin name meaning harp or stringed instrument, Pullman just used it is his books x

Toby and charlie are my faves of your boys bunch.

Erin my fave of the girls names. Isla and Elise are lovely but very now and may date.

Yep I instantly thought of Pullman with Lyra.
