How on earth do you pronounce this name?

My friend has just used it for her first DD. She insists it's pronounced Neave (Niamh) but the letters don't make that sound.

Loop! Spelt it erong in thread title. The name is Nevaeh (Heaven backwards).

At first glance I thought it was heaven spelt backwards.

I would just pronounce it the way your friend says.

belgo · 06/02/2010 09:08

oh it is heaven backwards. oh dear.

Aubergines · 06/02/2010 09:10

Sorry, clearly I am incapable of typing on this phone.

But yes, I agree, oh dear.

Any idea how to pronounce it?

regardless of the spelling/normal pronounciation you have to pronounce it the way your friend has told you as it is her child's name

shame she couldn't just use Niamh though

Paolosgirl · 06/02/2010 09:12

According to Wikipedia, the font of all knowledge, it can be pronounced na-vay or na-vay-a, so the Niamh pronounciation is incorrect, I think. It's heaven backwards, and become popular after Sonny Sandoval of the rock group P.O.D. named his daughter Nevaeh in 2000. It was then featured in the fall of that year on the television program MTV Cribs, and became very popular in the States.

So now you know!

BoysAreLikeDogs · 06/02/2010 09:13

Lordy I thought this name was one of them Urban Myffs

Bucharest · 06/02/2010 09:17

I wish it was one of those urban myths.

Another non-urban myth was the child I saw recently called Enaj.

OP- How on earth did you react?

Aubergines · 06/02/2010 09:17

Sadly not an urban myth.

Despite insisting on the Niamh pronouciation my friend us already referring to her as Baby Nev. This reminds me of the name Neville which I think would horrify her.

Paolosgirl · 06/02/2010 09:18

Enaj? How on earth do you pronounce that?

Aubergines · 06/02/2010 09:19

I reacted by saying how lovely and sweet. What else could I possibly do?

dizzydixies · 06/02/2010 09:21

well done Aubergines, you obviously have more tact and diploma than me, when I met an ex colleague who told me his kinds were called Grey and Zeff I immediately went

I have tried to improve with age but I blame it on a very expressive face

mathanxiety · 06/02/2010 17:31

Ne-VAY-ah. Sad but true.

Tell her she's to stop pronouncing it Niamh immediately!!!!!

weegiemum · 06/02/2010 17:35

Ne - veh - ah.

You know, like the hand cream!

The more I think about it the worse it seems.

Why spell hevean backwards? It's like spelling god backwards. It's almost devil worship like.

But I might get over the devil worshipping association if the backward spelling made a lovely sound. Then there would be a reason. But it doesn't even make a recognisable sound let alone a nice one. And the shortening is ugly too.

Such an odd choice.

Well, Heaven would be more of a stripper name, so you get around that by spelling it backwards.

OrmRenewed · 06/02/2010 23:53

How about egdeh. That's 'hedge' backwards. As in 'pulled through a'.

Bloody silly.

LaRagazzaInglese · 07/02/2010 00:01

i would say Neev-ah. And bleuurgh!! or Hgruuelb!

Bananaketchup · 08/02/2010 18:26

I looked after a Neveah at work and her mum pronounced it ner-VAY-a. Neveah was taken into care (not cos of the name!)

LedodgyChristmasjumper · 08/02/2010 18:31

"Why spell hevean backwards? It's like spelling god backwards."

PMSL Yes DOG would be a really stupid name.

cloelia · 08/02/2010 18:32

Fraid I just pronounced it Never when I saw your original post. Which is what I think of it as a name.
