What do you think of Briar as a girl's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.

I had a greyhound called Briar and I will always think of him if anyone said it in conversation.

Paolosgirl · 03/02/2010 18:55

I like it - which means permission to name her Briar has been granted.

Cortina · 04/02/2010 15:52

Isn't there Princess Briar-Rose or have I made that up?

I like it that said.

emeraldbell · 04/02/2010 15:55

My mum used to say I was 'like a briar' when I was in a bad mood. Not a good connection!

onlyjoinedforoffers · 04/02/2010 16:00

i had a Sleeping Beauty book when i was little and her name was Briar Rose

LilyBolero · 04/02/2010 16:03

Reminds me of Tony Blair for some reason.

What about (and I would never choose this myself, but you may like it) Bracken?

MaggieTaSeFuar · 04/02/2010 16:11

oh no, it sounds really angry. If some people want to give their child a name that would suit a poetic, creative, arty and imaginative type, then Briar is a name that would suit a spiky pissed off kind of child.

I think brooke shields has a grier, which isn't my style but is better than briar.

KayloHalo · 04/02/2010 16:20

I love it, it's so pretty!!!

nellyjane · 04/02/2010 16:57

Bryher is an island on the Isles of Scilly, off the coast of Cornwall... I think it's a beautiful name.

Briar reminds me of the story of Brer Rabbit who gets thrown into the briar patch... so I just think of brambles.

DoNotFeedMeBiscuits · 04/02/2010 21:43

I know of sisters called briar and bracken. surname roots...

pointydog · 04/02/2010 21:52

I don't like it. It's prickly

Such positive responses compared to Bertha!
Thank you.

livviloo · 05/02/2010 23:20

I have a Felix and we are TTC number 3 and my DH suggested Briar. Like many others I also have prickly feelings about it.

dizzydixies · 06/02/2010 08:57

i know one and she is a horror so no imo, sorry!

BooStar · 24/02/2010 17:33

I know a Briar and she has to be possibly the most stunning woman I have met... Really lovely lady too. So it has good connotations for me. Unusual as well I think - I'd not heard of the name before I met her.

displayuntilbestbefore · 24/02/2010 17:35

I think people would constantly be asking her to repeat her name when she's said it.

AllieW · 24/02/2010 18:08

Not keen at all, sorry. It just makes me think of thorns and scratches. In fact, it's almost enough to make me consider names I wouldn't normally like Blossom and Bronwen.

crankytwanky · 25/02/2010 22:21

Ooh I love it!
I always thought I'd name a girl Briar Rose after my 2 bezzy mezzys. I would drop the Rose now I'm older though.

It's floral, but not girly IYSWIM.

Aviendha · 26/02/2010 11:56

I know a very articulate and intelligent Bryer (as in the Island) and quite like the name.

Briar Rose sounds dim and princessy to me.

I suspect most people would see either name and think princess.
