Will my poor child have to spell this name (Amabell) if we give it to her????

Due in June, my DH and I have really struggled with girls names (we don't know the gender). My DH loves Annabell but I don't like the name Anna so he found in the book Amabell, which we both really like.

But will the poor girl have to spell it all the time because people will mistake it for Annabell????

How is Amabell pronouced?

Is it Annabel with a m sound?

Think so, at least that's how I'd say it. I read somewhere that Mabel comes from Amabel, and in medieval times Mabel was pronounced "Mabbell" not "Maybel"...

I know one but she pronounces it Ay-ma-bel, presumably to get round the Annabel issue.

Amabel is quite nice... It would mean lovable in franch to : more or less "aimable"
My sons"names are Rémi and Jehan. (we are Belgian and french speaking) they are 20 AND they still have to spell their names because in french "Rémi" is usually written without an accent and whith a "y". And yet I didn't invent it : it was my grand father's name. It is just not very common!
My son Jehan has a bigger problem : nobody pronounce it right "JE-AN" He hears "Juan" ou "Johan". And yet Jehan is a real name to : it is "John" in the medieval way. But one more time it is not very common!
It must be the price to pay to be a little bit original ...

Why not call her Annabel and shorten it to Belle?

If you want 'lovable' or rather 'loved' you could try Aimee (sorry can't type the accent). On the other hand that will automatically be mistaken for Amy.

Personally I would go for Anna. Lovely name.

Yes, but you can have a really simple name like Jane/Jayne and have to spell it all the time.

I think people will also call her Annabel assuming that Ammabell is a typo! Sorry!

People will mistake it for Anabel all the time I am afraid.

This was a top contender for my dh and I with our oldest we ended up not using it because we thought just that she will ALWAYS need to spell it.. So we gave dd1 a perfectly normal name Phoebe.. and guess what

we have to spell it ALL the time.. It amazes me when you use traditional spellings that this becomes a issue..

my youngest is called Aoife yes she has to spell it yes she was able to spell it from when she was 3 years old she is now 6 and she loves her name and loves how special it is (no we dont live in Ireland lol I know there is many there) So I have come to the conclusion that it is about how we make it if you explain to your daughter why you picked it how much both daddy and you loved the name and how special it is for you that she is named something the 2 of you together picked and loved she will grow up thinking her name is beautiful and lovely and will have a certain pride in spelling it "A M A"

I would also point out that Annabell would need to be spelt

All ways to spell that name so even if you went safe and went with Annabell she would need to spell it

I have got an Annabella - she is never known as Anna which I am not keen on either. Don?t avoid Annabel (which is lovely and easier than Amabel as one or two people have pointed out with varying degrees of strength of feeling!) because you don?t like Anna - if you never shorten her name to Anna then no one else will.

You know what? Give your child the name YOU FEEL DEEP INSIDE is the right one...
Moreover it's a "plus" to have a special name. May be she'll have to spell it all her life, but she will be remebered by every one and for ever!

Amabel sounds like Annabel with a blocked nose.

Just PMSL at Amabell. I hope that other posters have convinced you already - terrible!
