that goes well with our 1 syllable surname which sounds a bit like Marsh (ie begins with M and has an 'sh' ending). We like quite English sounding names and nothing too common either. To give you an idea our current top names are:

Beatrice/Beatrix
Jemima
Imogen
Clementine
Penelope
Mirabel

Edward
Barnaby
Tobias
Benedict
Laurence
Hugo

Any suggestions/opinions would be appreciated.

I like Beatrice and Tobias

janeite · 30/01/2010 19:05

Beatrice and Benedict are my faves. Laurence, Barnaby and Tobias all fabbo too.

MrsJohnDeere · 30/01/2010 19:16

Like all your girls' names except Penelope. Mirabel the nicest, I think, if only because the others are quite popular.

Of the boys names I love Edward and Hugo. Not keen on the others.

PollyTechnique · 30/01/2010 19:33

Love them all except Penelope, Barnaby and Hugo and I think Jemima wouldn't flow well with your surname, being a "ma ma" sound together.

momofnearly2 · 30/01/2010 19:54

Penelope is definately the best girls name. I love the nn Penny!

I like all of the boy's list!

dizzydixies · 30/01/2010 20:29

love Penelope, Beatrice, Imogen and Clementine but if popularity bothers you I think they're all rising

Edward and hugo are fab

frizzylizzie · 30/01/2010 20:30

Jemima or Penelope

Edward or Benedict

cityangel · 31/01/2010 00:17

Imogen and Hugo are fab

nobrandname · 01/02/2010 11:49

Beatrice/Beatrix - Like Beatrice
Jemima - middle class staple, but nice. Too many m's with the surname?
Imogen - popular and still fresh
Clementine - not likely to become very popular. Fab choice with surname
Penelope - like this
Mirabel - cow's name and not with the surname

Edward - popular and nice
Barnaby - yes
Tobias - not sure with the surname
Benedict - fab
Laurence - a bit meh
Hugo - I like this too

Clementine or Benedict

monetinjanuary · 01/02/2010 12:29

We have similar tastes

Penelope or Laurence

How about Evangeline or Octavia, or Gabriel?

zozzle · 01/02/2010 13:59

Like Imogen, Penelope and Tobias. Others are a bit too posh / pretentious sounding for my taste - esp. Laurence and Hugo. Sorry!

HalcyonDaze · 07/02/2010 13:12

Thanks for your feedback. Beatrix/Beatrice and Penelope appear to have come out top of the girls but some of you really dislike Penelope. Maybe it's a marmite name?

Edward and Benedict faired best out of the boys (which is good cos they are my favourites atm).

There wasn't much between the names tbh so at least I know I am on the right track.

monetinjanuary thanks for your suggestions. Love Evangeline and this is a strong contender for a mn. Octavia is also rather lovely but I already have a dd with an 'ia' ending so that's out unfortunately. DH has vetoed Gabriel .

zozzle I do tend to go for 'posher' sounding names so I can't argue with your comments.

This has been really helpful so thanks. I've also got tons of inspiration from the other threads so no doubt I will be posting again soon.
