Gabriel for a boy

What do you think of Gabriel for a boy? I really like the sound of it, but it might seem a bit feminine. It might be nice as a middle name - what about William Gabriel?

gabriel a really nice boy name i taught only two in the 12 years i worked

Rindercella · 26/01/2010 13:17

Love it. Am currently pg with DD2, if she'd have been a boy, then Gabriel was in my top 3 names. Think it is lovely enough to stand as a first name personally (there are lots of Williams/Wills about at the moment).

SqueezyB · 26/01/2010 16:46

I love it but DH vetoed it because our surname starts with a B. He says Gabe B... sounds too much like Gay B... and so he would get teased mercilessly at school!

Pineapplechunks · 26/01/2010 16:48

I think it's lovely, romantic, beautiful but know what you mean about being a little feminine. I think your William Gabriel is a good solution.

Gabriel William sounds better.

rubyslippers · 26/01/2010 17:12

love it

dd would have been Gabriel

midnightexpress · 26/01/2010 17:14

Love it. It is my name for a (hypothetical) ds3. Also love the shortening to Gabe.

Two4One · 26/01/2010 17:31

It's one of those names women love and men loathe. It's the "Gay" thing. And the angel doesn't help matters. I think it's a lovely name but DH said "Absolutely no way, never." And that was that.

fotheringhay · 26/01/2010 17:44

Sorry, the boy next door when I was younger was called Gabriel, and was bullied horribly at secondary school. This was mid-80s though, more unusual names around now.

Jamieandhismagictorch · 26/01/2010 18:40

I really wanted to use Gabriel, but it was vetoed by DH for the reasons mentioned above.

BUT, I think he was wrong and we could have used it, no problem.

I see it as a strong name - Gabriel Oak

LetThereBeRock · 26/01/2010 19:24

I love it. I'd use it as a first name though. It's too nice to be hidden away.

dottyaboutstripes · 27/01/2010 11:54

It's my absolute fave boy name - and I am lucky enough to have my very own Gabriel (Gabe if shortened) No one has ever made any kind of "gay" comment - thus far. It's a fantastic name. I really like William as well and I think the names go together nicely either way around.....but I do think there are ever so many Williams around, my Gabriel has 3 in his class alone! (He is 5 btw)

I have a Gabriel / Gabe. No one has ever said anything rude about the name and he has never been teased about it. But by the standards of our neighbourhood it is quite a conservative name...

mummyloveslucy · 27/01/2010 13:53

I like it although, it could be shortened to Gay. You know what children can be like.

gladders · 27/01/2010 13:55

am not keen as a first name - but middle name is fine - quite a good idea to have something more alternative as a middle name in case they want an alternative when they're older? (i deeply regret my v boring middle name choices of charles and jane and really wish i'd gone for stanley and mabel now..... hindisght is a wonderful thing!)

SerenityNowAKABleh · 27/01/2010 13:58

I loooooooooove it, but couldn't use it because DP's surname begins with a G, and friends of ours named their DS Gavriel.

GabeMonster · 07/02/2010 00:03

I have my very own Gabriel too and get soooo many lovely comments from people when they learn his name. We do shorten it to Gabe as well.
Our little man is Gabriel Edward .

displayuntilbestbefore · 07/02/2010 00:16

Love it

Monty100 · 07/02/2010 00:39

Thumbs up here.

nickschick · 07/02/2010 00:48

I lo9ve it we have 3 ds and a 4th would be called Gabriel.

Wolfblass · 07/02/2010 13:43

We have a 10 month old Gabriel Henry (we love the name William so if we have another DS it would be a William)

When i was pg with my daughter (now 6) OH wanted Gabriel if bump was blue and i vetoed it completely (i thought it was far too girly back then).

However i fell in love with it this time around, we just couldn't agree on any other name at all and none had the 'feel'. We've had a few raised eyebrows and my family absolutley despised it - but when he was born they said it was perfect and now everyone loves it.

OH passed it by his rugby mates and they actually though it was uber cool .

We live in a very small village and at our mums and tots, their are 6 Alfies (two in the village!), 5 Jacks and 3 Freddies

I am so pleased i grew up and agreed that dp's name choice was and is perfect
