Thanks weegiemum, that's what I thought too.

Please ignore the other thread, posted twice for some reason :S

Fin-lay

Barbarellas · 20/01/2010 11:38

So Finley and Finlay are different names aren't they? It always confuses me as they are often grouped together as one name, yet I rarely see Sophie and Sophia -for example- put together as one name.

IMO if it were spelt Finley i'd pronounce it fin-lee whereas Finlay would = Fin-lay.

Both Finlay and Finley pronounced Fin-lay.

Never heard of the Fin-lee pronunciation.

Pingpong · 20/01/2010 15:51

Neither I would say Fin-le but not a strong lay or lee at the end and I've been saying it for 34 years. It's got a really soft ending.

CurlyCasper · 20/01/2010 15:53

What yama said, IMO

Vivia · 20/01/2010 15:53

Finley is a really 'trendy' spelling right now, I don't know why. Finlay - if we're talking about the Scottish name - is the correct spelling. And somehow the 'a' instead of the 'e' gives it a totally different feel. Finley might suit a baby, but seems odd for a 40yr old man while Finlay seems perfectly normal. There is something saccharine about the 'e'. Here (in Scotland) Finley is often pronounced Fin-lee but they are the same name.

Spell it Finlay, please!

mawbroon · 20/01/2010 15:55

Fin-lay

Pingpong · 20/01/2010 15:59

Agree that Finlay is the proper Scottish spelling and the Finley seems popular since the fire engine programme became popular.

Barbarellas · 20/01/2010 16:13

Been searching on Google for name pronounciations that I can listen to and found this:

Finlay www.forvo.com/search/Finlay/

Finley www.forvo.com/search/Finley/

Click the blue triangles to listen.

According to this website they are pronounced differently - only slightly mind!

Would you agree with this?

Tamarto · 20/01/2010 16:52
