Kate

We are considering Kate for our baby girl, it is the first name that feels do-able (or perhaps safe enough) She'd probably end up getting called Katie.

We were also considering Seren, Serenity, Violet, Elisha, Sophie, May, Beth, Cordelia, Elspeth and Fenella.

Our surname is a bit like Bellingford, does Kate/Katie Bellingford sound ok? And what on earth could I use as a middle name for Kate? it's a bit of a tricky one.

LOVELY

JamesandHisFlamingSword · 16/01/2010 01:51

Kate Bellingford sounds ok.

But (sorry) is Kate a bit too "safe" ?

May is nice

I like Serenity - but prefer Serena. Could deffo use Serenity as a second name, though
Violet - good
Elisha- no - sounds a vit made up
May - ok
Beth- like this
Cordelia/Elspeth/fenella - bit "posh"

I sound so negative !

JamesandHisFlamingSword · 16/01/2010 01:51

What about Claudia ?

beccagrace2 · 16/01/2010 09:18

i love kate, and if we decide to use it we will prob go for Katherine (kitty) then kate later on if she likes.

i like claudia too tho, claudia winifred for us!

ChaosInCamelot · 16/01/2010 09:24

Like it. There are lots my age (early 30s), but a couple of my really good friends have it as a name which is probably why I like it so much. I don't know of any baies/young children with the name so there won't be lots with the same name I wouldn't think.

Prefer Kate to Katie I think, but if her given name is Kate then I suppose she can be whichever she prefers.

Also like May and Beth a lot from your list. Less keen on Elisha and Fenella.

piscesmoon · 16/01/2010 09:25

Kate is lovely. The only other one that I like from the list is Sophie.

seeker · 16/01/2010 09:30

Could you go for Katharine and call her Kate from the beginning?

I think Katharine Violet Bellingford sounds lovely!

Oh, and Katie Violet is good too!

AnnieBeansMum · 16/01/2010 09:34

Kate, Katie, Katherine are all lovely. The rest, I'm sorry, are kind of yuck.

yama · 16/01/2010 09:37

Kate is lovely, as is Beth.

I second Claudia.

coppit · 16/01/2010 09:39

Kate is a really nice name. I'd use it.

weegiemum · 16/01/2010 09:41

Oh, go for Katherine! I have one, she was her full name for years and has now chosen Kathy (she's 9) as what she wants everyone to call her.

Its lovely, timeless, and versatile. Very different from your other ideas.

Isn't Elisha a boy's name? The biblical Elisha was a man!

strawberrykate · 16/01/2010 09:41

I'm called Kathryn, but use Kate on a daily basis. I'd reccommen giving her the choice. I've always like my name.

Chuffinnora · 16/01/2010 09:41

My daughter is a Cait. (I made the mistake of calling her Caitlin - lovely name but very popular.) She's 8 now and we have called her Cait for years.
She will not answer to Katie.

yama · 16/01/2010 09:43

WeegieMum - there was a female Elisha in my Primary 5 class (I'm 33).

They could've been wrong I suppose.

OmniDroid · 16/01/2010 10:10

I have a Katherine Elizabeth (Kat-baby, Kitten or Kitty at this (10 months) stage). I kind of wish I'd gone the other way around as she looks like a Beth to me, but I am hoping she likes Kate when she is older. Both lovely names in my very biased opinion.

fedup1981 · 16/01/2010 11:19

Thanks everyone! I suppose Kate is a bit safe, but we are unglamorous on the breadline sort of people so I don't think we could suddenly get away with an Araminta or something.

I'm not very fond of Claudia, perhaps because I keep envisioning that plastic supermodel! I love May but our ds is called James and dp says we can't have James + May or everyone will think we're raving Top Gear fans

Beth is still a consideration, perhaps Bethany, although I don't know if Bethany Bellingford sounds a bit like a cartoon character?

I like Katherine but it's not really the name we wanted to go for, we like the simplicity of Kate, dp says he won't say Katie, just Kate. I also love Charlotte and Rose (Charlotte Rose Bellingford would be my ideal romantic girly name) but dp hates them!

When it comes to a name that is going to belong to someone for 90 years and has to carry her through all the many and varied stages of life and all the changing fashions that will happen over 90 years, safe is good! A name that was used 5, 50 and 500 years ago is probably still going to be a good thing to be called in another 100!

MaggieMnaSneachta · 16/01/2010 11:36

It's not a bad name but it never goes away. I know Kates my age and baby Kates, and it just feels a bit dull.

I love Anna and Beth though, and you could say the same about those so it's just personal taste.

I really like Elspeth actually! with Beth or Elsa for short.

IsItMeOr · 16/01/2010 11:37

Love Kate. Are you/DH Josh Wheedon fans by any chance?

bellissima · 16/01/2010 11:44

My sister Katherine has always been Kate, right from the beginning. But naming her Katherine gives her the choice.

fedup1981 · 16/01/2010 11:44

Elspeth and Fenella are dp's choices, neither of them feel natural to me. (But in typical man fashion he has now denied all knowledge of them so I guess they're not in the running any more anyway) lol

Seeker that's a good point, that's why we went with James for our ds, it's a classic name that has been consistently popular yet not toooo common for at least 100 years, probably more.

fedup1981 · 16/01/2010 11:46

IsItMeOr- no sorry, never heard of Josh Wheedon, who is he?

Norfolkbumpkin · 16/01/2010 11:49

I love the name Kate, mainly because it's my dd's name. I think being a one syllable name it sounds good with a longer surname. Happily everyone we know has stuck with Kate and not changed the sounding to Katie.

IsItMeOr · 16/01/2010 11:51

Sorry, was thinking of Eliza Dushku who starred in Buffy and Dollhouse, and Serenity which was the name of the ship in Firefly. But realised you were thinking of Elisha. D'oh. I'll get my coat.

Kate is still lovely though. Would use it myself if had DD (Katharine, shortened to Kate/Katie).

IsItMeOr · 16/01/2010 11:54

Those are all Josh Wheedon programmes btw. I am clearly a geek.
