Now I know all the nn's for Elizabeth but just interested on the general opinion.

So my question is, if you had an Elizabeth what would be your favourite nn/shortening?

Mine's is Lizzie, DP is Beth so for this reason we can't agree on this name.

I have one and she is Eliza. I also like Bess but this doesn't work with the EliZabeth spelling.

SE13Mummy · 18/01/2010 10:01

I like Eliza followed by Betsy and Betty.

tilbatilba · 18/01/2010 10:20

Libbet

Mammina · 18/01/2010 11:19

Bess, I love it

BaronessBarbaraKingstanding · 18/01/2010 13:00

I love Lizzy but it would inevitably eventually become liz which is not great.

so I'd go for Bess or Betty.

or i'd try to stick to Elizabeth, such a beautiful name.

Wasn't expecting so much of a response!

I wasn't aware of Buffy but DP looked at me like I was crazy when I suggested that as a nickname.

We would like not to shorten it but MIL shortens DD1's name and it drives me bonkers so this name would inevitably get shortened too so I'd prefer it was something I liked!!

The annoying thing is we were thinking of Elizabeth in honour of my gran, my aunt(godmum) my DP's aunt and a good friend, and they are all Liz/Lizzie so I can't really understand why DP doesn't like it!

Also he like's Isobel but would shorten it to Izzie!!!! men eh!??

Lil or Lily

stuffedmk · 22/01/2010 11:42

Beth.
But I like Beth as a name anyway.

LouMacca · 22/01/2010 11:54

Love, love, love Betsy.

Beth and Libby also nice but a definite no to Betty or Lizzie.

meggymegmegs · 22/01/2010 13:08

Betty or Betsie. It's on my shortlist.

ben5 · 22/01/2010 13:10

beth

OmicronPersei8 · 22/01/2010 13:11

Betty here too.

I read an Enid Blyton book when I was very young, and there was a character called Lizzie who was a speccy nerd. She transformed herself and claimed back Elizabeth so I tend to associate Lizzie with speccy, frizzy-haired types.

Not many people would have that association though, and having said that, I don't think that of Lizzie in P&P in such a way.

DH calls his friend who's an Elizabeth, Lilibet - she is very unroyal, so it's more than a tad amusing.

Ziggurat · 22/01/2010 13:23

I would also add that I am an Isobel and hate Izzy - likewise, it reminds me of buck-toothed, geeky types.

SuperSoph73 · 22/01/2010 13:23

Ellie is my favourite shortened version of Elizabeth.
