I'm surprised at the responses you received- how rude. The only thing possibly of note about Oscar is that it does seem to be of the moment. eg this thread shows lots of zeros for those with school age kids but lots of Oscar positives among pre-school parents. Does he look like an Oscar? Post a pic on yopur profile and we'll tell you! And coo.

Oscar is a decent name. Yes it's popular but that's because it is so appealing - to all classes!! Why does it matter??

People are so obsessed with how classy their children's name are. Do you think your social status depends on whether you child's name is posh or only used by the middle classes?

I know of a very common scally Hugo, Henry and Sebastian. These are all thought of as 'posh' names but to me they are no longer! Back in the day the working class rarely touched the middle-class/upper-class names but that is no longer the case, in fact it's quite the opposite!

None - but I know 2 folk who have parrotts called Oscar if that counts!

SnowWorm · 15/01/2010 11:46

No opinion on Oscar, but Oskar-with-k is scary

OtterInaSkoda · 15/01/2010 11:48

One is ds's class (of 30). He is delightful.

I know of others but not at ds's school. It's fairly popular - but not two-a-penny. It is most definately not common though!

They were all very nice, crowding around smiling etc (on school run) .But the cumulative silent effect re name made me question my choice

Photo, see if I can get a decent one!

Yes, is quite very disturbing. I didn't watch the whole of the clip before linking. Apologies.

Great film though.

MarshaBrady · 15/01/2010 11:59

It does look very good / scary, (except for weird baby bits)

There are no Oscars in dc's school

There are none in the all boy secondary school I work in, although suspect there will be a few in the next couple of year's intake.

FlightAttendant · 15/01/2010 12:13

The boy in that looks like ds2. It's freaky.

Still not seen whole film.

princessmel · 15/01/2010 12:20

2

hulabula · 15/01/2010 14:01

I only know Oscars that are under 3. I therefore agree that it has recently become very popular - hence the lack of older Oscars in school. I suspect there will be loads in the next few years.

Nice name, but I worry about it becoming too trendy too quickly... Of course, that may not bother everyone.

fridayschild · 15/01/2010 14:11

None in DS1 class of 31, year 2, and never have been.

DS2 now in class of 24 and has an Oskar. One Oskar went and lo! another one came. The old one was nice, I don't know the new one.

There are lots of Swedish families near us so this is why we have Oskars rather than Oscars I think.

MintyCan · 15/01/2010 14:15

I have never met one, none at our schools.

upahill · 15/01/2010 14:23

None in class
or year
or school
or in any of my activities that I run for young people
or in the cubs or scouts that my DC attend
or at our church
or in the swimming club

In my 40 odd years of living I have never knowingly met an Oscar.

thisisyesterday · 15/01/2010 14:24

none
i know 2 baby oscars thoughh

Blu · 15/01/2010 14:27

1 in the class above, (so 9 or 10 yrs) and in my wider field of contacts I know one Oscar who is about 13, and one baby, about 18m.

All v sweet and lovely.

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 15/01/2010 14:32

Two in the class and at least one in other classes.

MarquiseDeMerteuil · 15/01/2010 14:47

I think Oscar's a great name, but it is definitely rising up the popularity tables if you look at the info for the last few years on the Office of National Statistics website.

Its rise in popularity has probably been helped a bit by the fact that the comedian Michael McIntyre has a routine in which he talks about his son Oscar, which featured on his latest tour and current DVD.

None in the school I work at (infants, 270 children)

herethereandeverywhere · 15/01/2010 14:57

Love the name and would have been on our shortlist if a family member hadn't beaten us to it. DD too young for school but we know 3 Oscars all born last year. Interestingly, to 3 very different families:

one very posh/wealthy/well to do
one lesbian couple
one working class family

All lovely people and lovely babies.

Great name!
