Why do people I meet insist on giving their opinion

Every time I go to the shops or something I get asked "whats his name?", when I say it they either say "what" and I have to repeat it about three times and then they give me a sort of fake smile as if they dont know what to say. i know they think its so disgusting they dont even know what to say. but i find it so rude because its obvious they hate it, time they should just pretend they heard me the first time or something. i went to a doctor the other day and he said "this is the first time we've had a v in here, very strange!" pronouncing it wrong. thing is, its a very traditional and well known literary name, is a roman name which has been in my family for years, made me sort of wary of a doctors opinion who did not know how to pronounce it. i hate how people subtly judge names every day and make faces and judge you as a weirdo because of it. if i met someone with a disgusting name i would have an open mind to it growing on me. i would be so careful not to let it slip that i found it odd.

Virgil is quite well known in France by the way.

I think it's a lovely name too.

And you may be overthinking this.

My little one has an unusual name too and I've had some weird comments but as other people have said, people are just tyring to make conversation.
When you pick an unusual name you have to live with the fact that people are not used to it and do not know how to react to it.
Some just don't like it, that's fine, there are names I don't like and some people have this name, doesn't mean I don't like the person.

You've chosen a name that is going to attract attention because it's unusual in the UK. When ppl ask a child's name, they usually like to make some innocuous and pleasant remark, along the lines of "O, I knew a ..." and maybe Virgil just stymies them as it's beyond their realm of reference or maybe they're only just stopping themselves coming out with something stupid like, "Oh, after the Thunderbirds puppet?"

There is a gorgeous cherub at preschool club dd attends and his name is Zebedee, it's an association that's a very happy one and always brings a smile to my face, I can almost hear the Zebedee boing and appropriately he has springy corkscrew curls. His parents must have known what they were doing when they named him, they are not the sort of ppl who march to society's conventions anyway.
