The only name I like from either list is Esme.

Tillyscoutsmum · 11/01/2010 16:27

I like Francine, Esme and Dulcie and Peter and Victor

beccagrace2 · 11/01/2010 16:31

I like Esme Melordy and Dulcie

And Crispin

mathanxiety · 11/01/2010 17:06

Francine -- Don't like, prefer Frances
Rusty -- NO; this is a dog's name or a nn for someone with red hair.
Esmé -- Like a lot
Melody -- OK
Mercy -- No, prefer Mercedes
Alpha -- No, prefer Aphra. Alpha is too like emergency personnel-speak, Alfa Romeo, alpha dog, alphabet, etc.
Dulcie -- Like

Boaz -- Like a lot
Peter -- Love
Victor -- Like
Crispin -- OK
Guy -- OK
Brenton -- NO, much prefer Brendan

So, names I like are Esme and Dulcie for girls, and Boaz, Peter and Victor for boys.

Boys:

legallyblond · 11/01/2010 17:36

Francine - no, but Frances is lovely
Rusty - no no no
Esmé - I LOVE this
Melody - no
Mercy - no
Alpha - this is pretty vile I'm afraid
Dulcie - no, not good

Boys:

Boaz - terrible
Peter - fine, but I oddly really don't like Pete as nn
Victor - fine, I know 2, but neither are English, so an odd choice if its not for a non-English cultural background reason
Crispin - Ok, but a bit pretentious... Tristan is marginally better
Guy - meh
Brenton - no - maybe go for Brendan?

lljkk · 11/01/2010 17:41

Poncy, in a word. Sums up both lists.
(You do want honest reactions, right?).
That said, I would be happy to hear a new baby called Mercy, Francine, Peter or Guy. I feel meh or worse about the others.

othersideofchannel · 11/01/2010 18:51

I really like Francine, Esmé and Dulcie from your girls list.

From your boys list, I particularly like Victor and Crispin.

I've never come across Alpha or Brenton, so don't really have a strong view on those two.

MrsMattie · 11/01/2010 19:08

irls:

Francine could grow on me. It's sweet. I like Franny or Fran as a NN =, too.
Rusty reminds me of the grotty teenage son in those Chevy Chase films...name escapes me.
Esmé - not keen. Really popular right now in various forms and just not a nice name imo.
Melody - poncy.
Mercy - sweet, but sounds quite religious. I have a very Catholic great aunt called Mercy.
Alpha - beyond awful. Aphra is a nice name, however. As in Aphra Benn.
Dulcie - dreadful
hate all your boyds names with a passion. Sorry to be brutal. Brenton is particularly vile.

ellesabe · 12/01/2010 19:37

Love Esme and Boaz

JohnnyYellowHat · 12/01/2010 19:47

Girls:

Francine - Like it, but much prefer Frances
Rusty - Awful
Esmé - Quite like
Melody - Not sure about this one, it might grow on me
Mercy - Don't like
Alpha- Awful
Dulcie - No

Boys:

Boaz - No
Peter - Lovely name
Victor - Like
Crispin - Don't like
Guy - Don't like
Brenton - No

I'd go for Francine and Peter

avaj · 12/01/2010 21:12

Francine is quite nice, and I like Esme.
Rusty, Alpha and Dulcie are awful.
Really dislike all of the boys .

amulg · 12/01/2010 21:29

Not Rusty.

CantSleepWontSleep · 13/01/2010 08:38

I like Esme (but getting popular) and Melody from your girls' list, but none from your boys list.

girlsyearapart · 13/01/2010 08:52

esme only one ok ish but haven't seen it with an accent before. It's my sister and my niece's middle name.

guy if I reeeally had to pick a boy name from the list.

shoobidoo · 13/01/2010 10:58

I like Francine best

And Victor, Crispin and Peter from the boys list.

bellissima · 13/01/2010 13:22

I like Peter - it's a great name and deserves a come back. I also know a v nice Crispin, and have a nephew Victor. (However - do not do what his mother did and call his brother Oscar. she has two more boys and I refer to them as Tango and Foxtrot).

Out of the girls - only Esme - which for some reason was massively popular in Newcastle around the early-mid 90s - DD of a friend of mine was one of three Esmes in her class. Melody is, if my own DDs are correct, a Barbie-movie name - or no ang on, it's the daughter of Disney's Ariel - the little Mermaid rides again (or swims again. or something).

smother · 13/01/2010 15:21

People are very harsh aren't they! But you said you wanted honest opinions so here are mine:

Francine - lovely, unusual, also like Frances.
Rusty - ooh no, I wouldn't. sounds like a dog's name. also what about the meaning? not good I'm afraid.
Esmé - so popular now, in an off-putting way, but a lovely name.
Melody - ok, quite sweet.
Mercy - no, again, think of the meaning? also think of madonna.
Alpha - not good. makes me think of Alpha male.
Dulcie - like this a lot, it's becoming a bit more popular but that's the problem with nice names!

Boys:

Boaz - come again?
Peter - boring
Victor - makes me think of red-faced white-haired train drivers.
Cri spin - don't like it. makes me think of crispy (a suitable brother for rusty?!)
Guy - Love this name. cool. under-used. sexy on an adult (not sure how it will sit on a cute little boy though)
Brenton - sounds like a surname.

OtterInaSkoda · 13/01/2010 15:33

Francine I like very much. Esme is pretty but depending on where you live, could be two a penny - likewise Dulcie.

Mercy might be OK if you're seriously RC.

Melody is pretty.

I rather like Peter, Guy is cooler though.

Alpha looks like a misspelling (of Aphra perhaps).

How do you pronounce "Boaz"? Does it rhyme with "nose"? In which case no - brings to mind "Bozo".

I'm a bit about Crispin. It's a bit Ruperty I think, but it could grow on me.

Soooo IM not even remotely HO : Francine or Guy are the way to go.
