Hi
Just wondered if anyone has any feedback on our potential name choices for baby due in March: bit of background info - we cannot use the following girls names: Alexandra, Helen, Constance, Katherine, Harriet, Charlotte, Florence. Boys names can't use Max, Joseph, Tom, Ben, Noah, Caleb. My hubby is very conservative with his name preferences whereas i?m not - trying to find a balance to suit us both.
Surname is A s h e r so obviously not Natasha, Sacha etc!

Girls choices:
Emilia (nn Emmy- Amelia v popular but very few near us only 1 in local school according to my sister)
Kate (Kitty- love this but aware it is getting more popular & worried hubby will not use nn and it won?t stick)
Elizabeth (nn Eliza, lovely but don?t feel wow factor for some reason?)
Others i like include: Lucia (bit of a mouthful with surname ? lulu cute tho),
Emmeline, Cecily, Nancy (love it) but all vetoed by DH

Boys
Barney (only one we half agree on)
Zack (like this but worried it will date easily, v popular and more importantly sounds like a sneeze with surname?)
Chester, Benedict, Dante, Rudy, all vetoed by DH

thank you for any comments!

I like Elizabeth.
Not sure on boys names they are always hard. Maybe Barnaby?
Lol at Zach Asher. Agree it sounds like a sneeze or a karate move!

LaTristesse · 11/01/2010 14:06

I think I like Barney best from your boys list. And I'm not sure about having a name starting with a vowel given that your surname does, so that's making me lean towards Nancy or Kitty from your girls list - that might just be me being weird though - feel free to take no notice! (Does it matter if DH doesn't use the nn? - doesn't mean you can't...)

FeedTheBeast · 11/01/2010 14:31

Yes first names with vowels do make it a bit of a mouthful i agree. MIL had a nighmare choosing names for her LO's too, it seems a hard surname to match up well. Then of course there is the initials thing, in the family we already have S.M.Asher, B.Asher, M.Asher etc which is quite fun..

Girls:
Emilia - love this name, but will you forever be saying no E-milia, not Amelia??

Kate/ Kitty - love these names but would always have Katherine nn Kate or Kitty.

Elizabeth - love it esp. nn Eliza - I also love nn. Libby and Beth.

Not keen on Lucia or Lulu prefer Lucinda.

Like Emmeline, Cecily and agree with your DH on Nancy.

Boys
Sorry, not keen on your boys names. How about...

Dominic
Patrick
Frederick
Hamish
Joseph
Maxim
Charles
Henry
Matthew

Good luck.

My sisters' girl is Katherine, (never shortened to anything) so feel like we are pushing it a bit with Kate really, just love Kitty tho.

Kate (Kitty- love this but aware it is getting more popular & worried hubby will not use nn and it won?t stick)-love but why not just call her kitty not kate.

Barney DISLIKE
Zack LIKE IT, ZACK SOUNDS FINE WITH YOUR SURNAME
Chester, Benedict, Dante, Rudy, NOT KEEN ON THESE

What about

Niall
Joel
Samuel
Evan
Sean
Euan

ChilloSTOPFOLLOWINGMEhippi · 11/01/2010 15:40

Emilia is ok. I wouldn't use it personally. It's too close to Emily, which I think of as an ugly name.
Kate is timeless and nice and would suit anyone.
Elizabeth is fine. I can see what you mean about it not having the wow factor, but neither does Kate.
Lucia is too 'fancy'. How about Lucy?
Emmeline - see Emilia
Cecily is a bit namby pamby.
Nancy is a name that I used to like but I've gone off it.

Barney NO! It's a purple dinosaur.
Zack is ok. Don't do it if it sounds like a sneeze though!
Chester. Really? He'll be called Charlie Chester in school.
Benedict - no.
Dante I really like! It was vetoed by my DH too.
Rudy is a nice name, but I wouldnt' do it.

piscesmoon · 11/01/2010 15:50

I can see why your DH vetoed the boy's names. I'm afraid Barney is a purple dinosaur to me too! However it is the best of the bunch.
I much prefer Emily to Emilia.
Elizabeth is lovely or Eliza
I think Lucy is much better than Lucia
Kate is lovely but not keen on the rest.

FeedTheBeast · 11/01/2010 16:03

LOL! my poor baby doesn't have a chance does it! Maybe i should just start again from the begining... Put off Chester my friend who said Chester Draws....

its just that so many girls names i'm drawn to end in A and do sound rubbish with surname. OH will not allow Kitty as a given name.

Most of the boys names my OH likes are just so ordinary, or a bit wet.

I like Cosmo??

piscesmoon · 11/01/2010 16:05

Why not have Katherine and it would just evolve as Kitty?

moomintrude · 11/01/2010 16:05

Emilia - don't like sorry, but I hate Emily so..
Kate - lovely name, as is Kitty
Elizabeth - not too keen on Elizabeth but I ADORE the name Bess as a nn
Lucia - I would only use this if I had Latin connections personally. Nice name though. Would you pronounce it the Italian way or spanish?

Boys
Barney - sorry, really don't like it, makes me think of that annoying purple thing
Zack - ok. prefer the full name Zachary

how about Gabriel? gorgeous name, or Reuben

cheesesarnie · 11/01/2010 16:09

whats wrong with ordinary?

whats your dh choices?

FeedTheBeast · 11/01/2010 16:12

Picesmoon niece is Katherine

moomintrude love Gabriel & Bess! Would pronounce Lucia- LuSeeA but doesn't flow with Asher.

Joke with hubby that he will prob have to check "company approved baby name list" he is so corporate & boring sensible...

OP posts:
piscesmoon · 11/01/2010 16:16

Catriona-shortened to Kitty?

FeedTheBeast · 11/01/2010 16:18

cheesesarnie i'm wary of listing them as wouldn't want to offend others, they are perfectly fine names, and i'm prob in the wrong as have previously tried to get him to agree to Rusty, for example (fair chance baby will be ginger), but he likes

Toby
Nicholas
William
Sam
Edward
Danny (hence thinking he may go for Dante - but no!)

girls:
Sophie
Hannah
Isobel
Victoria
Louise

(ducks for cover...)

OP posts:
piscesmoon · 11/01/2010 16:22

I love DH's choice!!
Not too keen on Toby, and prefer Daniel but the rest are lovely.

mathanxiety · 11/01/2010 17:52

Emilia -- lots of Emilias, Amelias, Amelies
Kate -- Like a lot, but your Dh doesn't like nns, right?
Elizabeth -- lovely and serviceable
Lucia -- Prefer Lucy

I think Louisa or Louise are lovely.

Boys
Barney -- purple dinosaur, prefer Barnaby
Zack -- prefer Isaac (plus Zack is a nn for Zachary)

I like the other boys' names that have been suggested here, except for Hamish and Maxim (Hamish Asher is like mishmash and Maxim Asher is a masher too.)

bellissima · 12/01/2010 10:11

The only Emilia I know (DDs class) is half-Italian. If your daughter isn't then I think people will assume it's Amelia. Also - I think 'a' endings, like 'sha' endings , not so good with the surname. So I too prefer Lucy to Lucia, and Louise to Louisa. Elizabeth and Kate both lovely. My sister Kate is Katherine but has always been Kate - its not even so much a nn just her name. But she has the choice should she want to use Katherine.

Like Patrick, Frederick (although it would always be Fred), Joseph and Henry - agree mathanxiety that some of the others don't go with the surname.
