I really love the name Mary with Elizabeth as the middle name. But I hate nick names with a z on the end e.g gaz, saz, daz etc (no offence!) My hubby has vetoed Mary because he says this is what will happen. What do you think?

Don't think it is something that will happen as a matter of course. I know a couple of Marys and they are never called Maz.
Of course, if your DD wants to be called Maz as she gets older then you are stuffed!

GenieoftheTramp · 10/01/2010 13:31

What if she's called Maz Liz?

bellissima · 10/01/2010 13:33

Doubt it. Think far more likely if you called her something like 'Marigold', 'Margery' etc.

LowLevelWhingeing · 10/01/2010 13:37

I know a Mary who gets called Mazza.

I've never known a Mary to be called Maz. Marilyn, yes, Mary, no.

HallelujahHeisBorntoMary · 10/01/2010 14:46

I've never been called Maz

GladioliBuckets · 10/01/2010 14:59

Only if you live in Australia, they work v hard to find nicknames where there are none.

addictedtomn · 10/01/2010 15:02

my friend is called mari-ann and she is known as maz so it may happen although mari isnt mary, so it could not

mazzystartled · 10/01/2010 15:06

I'm Maria and I got called Maz all the way through school (yuck)

My friend Mary gets called Scarey Mary which is worse

dizzydixies · 10/01/2010 15:15

I used to get Madge or mary doll!! never maz though

birdofthenorth · 10/01/2010 16:28

Scary Mary, Hairy Mary and Bloody Mary are more traditional nns!! But it's a beautiful name that most people won't feel the need to abbreviate so go for it

ZZZenAgain · 10/01/2010 16:32

I don't think she'll be called Maz

HislittlePoppet · 10/01/2010 17:29

I went to Catholic schools all my life with lots of Marys - and don't ever remember any of them being nicknamed Maz. I associate Maz with being the nn for Mark.

Ah thanks, it's good to hear it.
I'm now worried about scary mary lol!

I know a Mary who gets called 'Mare'. She hates it. Also if she gets ill alot some bright spark might think up 'typhoid Mary' as a nicname (happenned to me and I'm not even called Mary)

HallelujahHeisBorntoMary · 10/01/2010 19:17

I've been called Scary a few times, but only since I've grown up. My brothers called me Mare when we were younger, then it became nightmare.

skihorse · 10/01/2010 19:23

The English version of one of my names is Mary and not once (growing up in England) did anyone ever refer to me as Maz!

Clowance · 10/01/2010 19:36

Mary Elizabeth are my middle names They do flow well together.

Never heard of Maz linked with Mary, or any other name for that matter!

0percypig0 · 10/01/2010 19:53

One of my frends at school was called Marie and people used to and still do call her Maz. Really unsure whether to just veto it now. Back to the drawing board I think
