Is Alexander just too popular?

We really want to call our little boy (due in March) Alexander. We had a shortlist but that name really stood out and seemed to fit with my husband's surname. Also it's a family name on his side from his Scottish Gran's family. Before we made our choice, we really didn't think it was that popular but since, they seem to be everywhere. Is it just a matter of us spotting them more now that we've made a decision or is there actually a surfeit of little Alexanders running around?

Other names that were mooted were:

Estlin (it's Welsh, my husband has an uncle Estlin)
Bruno (I don't think I like that any more though)
Josiah - Joss for short
Marcello (I'm half Italian)

It is a lovely name, I only know one and he is 11. I would go for it.

I only know one too, he's 5 I think.

Its a lovely name, go for it.

Does it really matter if there are few others in his school with the same name? He won't be there forever will he?

It is a popular name - I think it's in the top 10 nationwide, if not, certainly is in our bit of south London (DH told me registrar had a list when he went to register DS). Who is an Alex(ander) btw .

I think it's a lovely name because of all the variants, so if your DS wants to have a slightly different name when he's older he can have a range to choose from.

it might be popular (although i don't know any) but i love it

suwoo · 10/01/2010 11:26

sorry, talking rubbish, a good friend had a baby called Alexander last year so I do know one! For some reason i was thinking of him but not counting him iyswim - probably because i haven't met him yet

MrsJohnDeere · 10/01/2010 11:30

I don't know any. Great name.

Love Bruno too, btw.

bearcrumble · 10/01/2010 11:36

Thanks ladies, I think we will go ahead and use it. There just isn't a name I like as much.

It is so weird how fashions for names come and go.

IsItMeOr We live in South London too...

Hi my son is called Alexander he is 10 and we have only ever come across one other in his school! We actually call him Xander and not Alex which is a bit different and seems to grow with him!I love it but then I'am biased!
