Isla and Iona?

i already have one of these but am pregnant with dc3 which could be a girl and i love both these names.

have obv already used one but can i get away with using the other? do they sound to alike? if it makes any diffrence these is another sibling inbetween them that is not named after a scottish island

I think that the sibling in between makes a difference as people normally say them in order; so Isla, William and Iona doesn't sound odd. Your mail will be a pain though by giving them the same initial and, if they are fairly close in age, teachers will mix up their names!

i love this name though.

If I heard them rather than saw them written down, I might think they were Islay and Iona, and think you were some mad Scottish nationalist (or American who had taken her pride in her ethnic roots just that bit too far). I'd wonder if there was a Skye at home too.

I do realise that Isla and Islay are pronounced differently, but I'd be caught off-guard by Iona and wonder if I'd heard correctly.

i have thought quietly to myself that these sisters' names are perhaps a little too similar but this is more of a curiosity than a negative thought. and then again, i know several sibling pairs with similar names, some much more similar than that! so I would go for it if you love these names - choosing names is hard enough!

They sound very pretty together, but I foresee practical difficulties.

When you are screaming their names up the stairs "HAVE YOU BRUSHED YOUR TEETH YET, IONA? WHERE IS YOUR GYM KIT, ISLA? WHY ARE YOU TAKING SO LONG IN THE TOILET IONA, WE SHOULD HAVE LEFT 5 MINUTES AGO?!" -- "Iona" and "Isla" will sound too similar and they won't know which of them you are shouting at.

So, I suggest more different sounding names.

thinking about it a little more: I would actually try to re-think because if you're uncertain about it now, it will stick as a nagging doubt once the new dd is born. so before you get too attached to the name, maybe better just to start afresh?

The names are similar in the fact that they are both Scottish islands, but don't sound similar.
I think both are lovely names and if I had girls would seriously think about calling them these names. (Slightly biased by the fact my father was from Islay.)

How about Ailsa? If your older girl is Iona?

the problem with the same initials comes later in life when it comes to bank statements etc.

i have three J initials and two J.D.'s which makes it ver confusing when getting the mail
