Girls' names - so hard!

Hello all,

Am pregnant with my first DD after 2 DSs and am finding name choosing this time round so difficult. We do have a shortlist (which sames to mutate weekly) but nothing is screaming "PICK ME!" like it did with the boys (who were incredibly easy to choose for).

Anyway, can I have honest opinions on the following:

Harriet (but only because I like in theory nn Harri tho' not sure in practice that I could call my tiny DD that!)
Romilly
India (but can't quite get passed the whole "country" thing and also this baby is likely to be of the fair skinned, blue eyed variety - does this matter?)
Indigo - chiefly because I love nn Indy (see above) but not sure this passes my barrister test!
Jessamy - love nn Jess but is this name punchy enough?

All alternative suggestions welcome. (roughly along the same lines if that exists)

Should add that I LOVE Ruby and Isabella too but cannot bring myself to use them as they're sooo popular. Is this daft? The boys' names are around 90-100 on the baby names list.

Love Harriet nn Harri - This will be top of my list when I have a girl (I also have two boys)

Am heartened by endorsement of Harri - have to say I do love boys' names as nn for girls' names(I've got one of those myself and have always liked it).

Also like Charley - hmmm might run that one past DH. Do know a fair few Charlottes but no little female Charleys.

All the names are lovely.

I also found girls names really hard. The name I went for eventually suddenly shot up in popularity, so avoid anything that is making it's way up the baby name list.

From your list, I wouold probably go for Romilly.

I also like girl's names with male sounding nicknames. I love Harriet from your list. Jessamy and Romilly both nice as well. Not so keen on India (and seems to be getting more and more popular)

Interesting that the only name on the list which has not been mentioned is Indigo - which kind of backs up my reservations as being lovely but quite a difficult name to carry off as both child and adult (tho' probably do-able if your Dad's a rock star).

Think the top 3 (in order) are now Harriet, Romilly and India. We are getting there!

TSM - just seen your message. Had to say I LOVE Georgie (Georgina) and that would be top of my list for definite but it's already taken sadly. Frankie is cute though, maybe for Frances rather than Francesca. Thanks for the suggestions.

Lovely names, how about Clemency or Xanthe. Frances is a gorgeous name too.

I actually much prefer Indigo to India, love the Indie nn but India is a country to me not a little girl. Indigo is pretty and incidentally my favorite colour so I've been considering it myself but I get the same doubts as you about it being a bit too rock n roll. As for girls names with boys nn Maxine nn Max has worked for me all these years.

I know someone with an Indira and nn Indy.

I love Romilly, and Romy. Also Jessamy.
I know a Harriet nn Hettie.

I think India is going to be a really popular name.

Agree with Libby that India is a beautiful name, but I am very biased!

Also like Romilly fron your list. One suggestion from me is Jasmine - kind of fits with Jessamy suggestion, but a little less unusual. Jaz/Jazzie makes a cool nn too. DD2 is due in a couple of months and is more than likely to be Jasmine, to go with her big sister India

I wouldn't choose Ruby or Isabella - they are nice, but there are lots of other (less popular) lovely girls names

Jessamy is lovely - nice sound and unusual.

India is a bit hippy/middle class pretentious, maybe sounds a bit daft on a fair child?

I'd think of Indigo as a boy's name, but of course it could be anything you want as its a colour.

Harriet - yeah, it's ok
Romilly - not keen, just sounds a bit daft to my ears
India - no, don't like this as a name at all
Indigo - no, it's either a colour or a trendy wine bar
Jessamy - bizarre cross between gossamer and jeremy

I love Harriet but don't like the others.

But you know how we think its stupid when Americans call their kids things like Devon or Ireland, right?
Well Indian people probaby feel the same about 'India'.
