only love Clara... are these your final shortlist or would you consider others?

Don't like Rosie unless it's a nickname
Alice is too popular for me.
Martha sounds too harsh to me

Nola is nice on first impressions but has the word 'no' in it so for 2 years in toddlerdom you'd be battling 'no nola' (la is also the arabic word for no)

what about
Kirstin
Imogen
Eleanor?

smother · 06/01/2010 23:48

oh no no no! hadn't thought of that with Nola. Do really like the name, though, partly because it's so rare - have yet to meet a Nola.

But does seem that Clara is winning so far.

Interesting!

What about Orla, Iona, Eleanor, Oonagh...

Nola is also the nickname for New Orleans...

smother · 07/01/2010 00:48

don't worry thesecondcoming, i realise that you've patented it!!

it is a beautiful name though. I still like Nola too, despite all the naysayers.

Alice

I have a relative named Mary Alice and thought it was a lovely combination. She was always called by both names.

jabberwocky · 07/01/2010 01:58

I like Nola too!

Clara/Alice/Martha all nice

Rosie too girlie.

Nola makes me think of the Nolan sisters - not sure that is a cultural reference you want to invoke?!

Going slightly off piste...I looked at what is possibly the world's worst baby name generator the other day - it suggested Jesse Jess and Octavia Madonna

If either of those appeal, they are all yours!!

Doozie · 07/01/2010 11:58

Alice or Clara. I like Mary Alice that Jabberwocky suggested too.

A big NO for Nola for me.

glasgal · 07/01/2010 12:08

Clara is both traditional and unusual.

Skegness · 07/01/2010 12:28

Nola isn't great.
Clara would be what I'd name a scullery maid if I was writing a story about one
Martha and Alice are nice names
Rosie is a lovely little girls name. I think Rose or Rosa might give more options for an adult.

LuciaRose · 07/01/2010 14:41

Alice and Clara are just gorgeous. Would work well together too.

Alice Clara

MrsJohnDeere · 07/01/2010 14:56

Alice or Martha.

Not keen on the others (Rose nicer than Rosie imo).

cityangel · 07/01/2010 23:36

Rosa
Rosalind
Rosina
...

silver18 · 08/01/2010 08:26

Love Alice and Martha. Really not fussed on Rosie x

ellokitty · 08/01/2010 10:03

Agree with others.

  1. Clara is by far the best name. Classy, unusual but with history.
  2. Martha. Lovely, but more popular than Clara, so I've placed it a bit below.
  3. Alice. Its okay, but just okay. Its not a pretty name and perhaps a tad boring.
  4. Rosie. Not keen, too twee as other PPs have said.
  5. Nola. Really not keen I'm afraid. Just makes me think Nolan sisters for some reason.

I do love Clara though. I know a little Clara and think it is a gorgeous name. I also know a baby Martha and think that is really pretty too - so either of those names are great imho.

Bella32 · 08/01/2010 10:24

I like them all!

Alice, Clara, Martha, Rosie then Nola, in order of preference

muminthemiddle · 09/01/2010 00:21

Clara is the best followed by Alice (I love names that begin with a "C)

smother · 09/01/2010 00:34

So if I go for Nola, there will be no danger of it becoming too popular in the future!!

It's a bit of a parodox that we all seem to want to use names that other people like but that aren't popular.... isn't it?

Anyway, am favouring Clara at the moment.

no not nola, Nuala is nicer

MrsMattie · 09/01/2010 01:11

Rosie - like it. Maybe have a more gornw up Rose name as her full name, though? Rose, Rosa, Rosanna, Rosalie all lovely.

Martha - it's ok, a bit 'meh'.

Alice - very pretty and sweet.

Nola - awful. Never heard it before. Not nice.

Clara - lovely.

Gillybean73 · 09/01/2010 01:20

Just a small word of warning if you are considering Alice - I have a friend called Alice who is in her early 20's and for years she has suffered with teasing because of the Roy Chubby Brown song "Who the Fuck is Alice" She gets annoyed and upset when she is introduced to people and they immediately launch into a rendition of it. Maybe when the next generation of girls called Alice come along this song will be forgotten about but you best be aware of it as my friend positively despises being called Alice!

Bella32 · 09/01/2010 11:07

Never heard of that song...

lovechoc · 09/01/2010 18:34

Clara and Rosie are my faves.
