Hi all,

We love the name Felix for our son who is due in March. We have been calling him that for months now.

Lately we are having a few doubts though as his surname will be Schittecatte (pronounced skitticatti in English). We are from Belgium where this is a pretty usual surname.

Normally we wouldn't care about the cat food association of 'Felix' but we are worried that in the UK (or possibly US), the combination of first and last name would mean that other kids would tease him...

What do you think of the combination 'Felix Schittecatte'?

Kids don't do that much name-based teasing in the US -- it's horrible in the UK, but in the US this kind of stuff is not common. I like the name, and don't think the combo is bad.

Felix is a cat's name. Having Cat in your surname as well is just asking for trouble.

Like Rex Dogsbody or something!

Sazisi · 19/12/2009 23:06

I love the name Felix, but the fact your surname actually contains 'cat' within it would completely rule the name out for me, sorry

ninah · 19/12/2009 23:06

please don't

Sazisi · 19/12/2009 23:07

Unless you all change your surname

crumpette · 20/12/2009 09:18

I like Felix but it's truly horrendous with the surname, sorry.

kitsmummy · 20/12/2009 09:22

Surely this is a joke? If not, you definitely cannot call your son Felix Shitty Cat, or Felix Cat Shit as he will surely become

MamaLazarou · 20/12/2009 09:35

very funny

diddl · 20/12/2009 10:20

I love the name Felix, but don´t think it goes with your surname.

Forgetting the cat association, I think that the x with the "ski" is clumsy, tbh!

amialoneinthisone · 20/12/2009 10:28

I'm going to be honest.

He's going to be teased for his surname whatever his first name is so you might as well go for a name you love.

skihorse · 20/12/2009 17:53

Strange - I lived in Belgium for 7 years plus and never ran in to this surname despite living in Flanders, Brussels and Oost Cantons... so pretty much covering all language areas!

Felix Shitty Cat is indeed pretty awful to bestow upon your precious.

caen · 20/12/2009 21:03

Well you made me laugh - very inventive!

Thissideofchannel · 21/12/2009 09:08

Felix is a cat food in the UK, so combined with Ski-Cat does not really work!

Stientje · 21/12/2009 14:36

Thanks for the replies. We will have to think about what the likelyhood is that we will be in an English speaking country when he is at the age that kids will tease him about his name. If we are back in Belgium, it won't be a problem. We don't really have an alternative at the moment that we both like, but we still have a few weeks to think of something.

@skihorse: I didn't say it's a common name in Belgium, but that it is a pretty usual name (as in, not strange).
