We now have a lovely little baby boy, born on Saturday. At home (no pain relief!), it was wonderful.

Now we are feeling the pressure, the pressure of a name.

Tobias - does this have a more religious or Scandinavian feel?

Rupert - hmm feedback on this not so great so far

Oscar - dh loves, very popular but it is cute

Henrik -dh's choice

What do you think?

Rupert is fab imo.

Pollyanna · 18/12/2009 12:39

I know a grown up Rupert who is lovely.

Aubergines · 18/12/2009 12:46

All lovely names. Tobias and Rupert are my favourites while Oscar is everywhere and very "of the moment" which might put me off a bit. Hendrik is lovely buy slightly left field unless you have connections to Scandinavia/Germany.

Good on you for not being rushed. I felt DD2 had to be named on the day of her birth and I do wish I had given myself some more time to think.

largevirginbirthandtonic · 18/12/2009 12:48

Rupert. I love it

Doozie · 18/12/2009 13:18

Henrik!! It is awesome! Please choose it!!

I like your other names, but Henrik is by far the best (imo...).

MarshaBrady · 18/12/2009 13:19

Edam I reread my post this morning and thought I sound a but snippy there. It was midnight and 3rd night of trying to keep ds warm in the freezing rooms so no sleep. But I think we cracked it and have slept so feel loads better. Hope you come back and see this

I really do love getting all these opinions, and am starting to understand the strong feelings against good ol' rupert.

Aubergines I know, I have strong pressure from mother dearest who sees 30 odd people a day through work- all of which ask for name, the school run was great but wow!

Thanks Doozie!

Congratulations! I like Tobias or Henrik. Oscar nice too- quite "of the moment" but I don't think that matters if you love a name.

I think it's very clear from this thread that Rupert is an extreme marmite name. I'm in the hate it camp too, I'm afraid. Obviously you can never come up with a name that everyone likes and it doesn't matter what others think if you love the name but if you are at all sensitive to what other people might be thinking when you call "RUPERT!" in the supermarket, I'd avoid it, tbh. I do admire people who are robust enough not to care at all, though.

MarshaBrady · 18/12/2009 13:54

Oh my, I just remembered one we thought of earlier, before ben and marina I might add- but saw that thread again and it reminded me.

Can I add Ludo to the list.

I thank you all. (i've had such support lately from amazing midwives, to friends I saw every day during pg and you guys, it's like the flipping Grammies round here at the moment).

All nice names but my vote is for Henrik.

edam · 18/12/2009 14:08

Oh, don't worry at all, I wasn't cross, have had far snippier comments on MN - and have been there with newborn baby and lack of sleep and emotions close to the surface.

Your baby is lovely whatever name you choose and he will grow into his name anyway. Anyone who meets him will come to think of him with that name rather than a generic 'Rupert' - which is used as shorthand for a certain type of (ex) public schoolboy. I used not to care for Luke or Callum but know two delightful boys of those names now so they have positive associations for me atm.

edam · 18/12/2009 14:09

Ludo reminds me of a Georgette Heyer novel so would amuse me but might provoke some reactions akin to Rupert...

stepaway · 18/12/2009 14:10

congrats on your new DS.

Tobias or Henrik are both great!

Oscar is wayyyyyyy too popular atm.

Rupert has too many associations (toffs and bears)

HerbalHolly · 18/12/2009 15:31

Henrik is a fab name. Sounds cute for a baby but I can see it fitting a grown man too. Very nice!
I have a friend called Rupert and he's not crazy about it.
Oscar is fun too, popular but for good reason. Again I think this is another name that would suit a baby, a boy and a man. Lovely.

GossipMonger · 18/12/2009 19:19

Ludo? No! Tis a game.

Rupert to me is a Quentin, Tristan type of name. Uber posh and Rupe for short is dire!

Tis a bit Brideshead Revisted whereas Tobias is lovely and flows off the tongue and Tobes is a nice NN as is Toby.

Where do you live as that might have some bearing on the name too.

MarshaBrady · 18/12/2009 20:02

Yes my snippiness is mild, even when subjected to Sylvester Stallone type situation from that movie where he is in a solitary prison cell and the lights come on every 5 minutes and they shout his name at him for 3 days. What is that movie?

I tried to say who I was last night and got so tangled I couldn't. But my parents are 'civilised' as they call it (so, posh) but we grew up in the middle of nowhere with no 'class indicators' hence my absolute ignorance and interest in the reaction to Rupert.

But I am getting it!

We now live in a lovely street full of Georgian houses in SE London, prep schooly, but lots of creative people - which is probably a bit specific.

We do seem to have hit a wall and call him the baby.

I'd like to now throw this open to any new suggestions if you please.

MarshaBrady · 18/12/2009 20:27

Ha Skegness, no CG nearby. That's the road, does it ring any bell? The long hill... in Camberwell with trees... etc

We are trying to avoid the ED Alfie, Archie scenarios.

I offer you my dog's name: Ollie

MarshaBrady · 18/12/2009 20:34

Ok googled - here it is

'Lock up'
Frank Leone is nearing the end of his prison term for a relatively minor crime. Just before he is paroled, however, Warden Drumgoole takes charge. Drumgoole was assigned to a hell-hole prison after his administration was publicly humiliated by Leone, and has now arrived on the scene to ensure that Leone never sees the light of day.

No to Ollie, I know too many boys with that name.
