A few girls' names

Hello everyone,

DH and I are stumped for a girl's name - we've gone through so many. I have this list and wondered whether any jump out for any reason, good or bad - just for fun really, as who knows what we end up calling her. DH is worried that we will still be dithering when she's doing her GCSEs. She's due next week.

Kitty/Catherine
Martha
Ruth
Lila
Laura
Gretchen
Justine
Lalita
Asha
Zorah
Nina

Ruth, Laura, Justine and Nina are the only ones on your list I would bother deliberating over!

Like Gretchen best from your list, but prefer Greta

Hulababy · 07/12/2009 18:21

I love the name Martha - beautiful name.

JaneiteMightBite · 07/12/2009 18:30

I really like Ruth and Martha from your list, followed by Catherine/Kitty.

I don't like Zorah, Lalita, Asha or Nina.

TheFallenMadonna · 07/12/2009 18:34

I like Kitty and Catherine, Martha, Ruth, Laura and Nina.

Kitty/Catherine - Kitty is a bit porn star is (I keep thinking of Brittney Spears singing "kitty kitty" in that slave for you song
Martha - lovely name - though I always think of Martha and the muffins, so hopefully she will be slim and not have a muffin top!
Ruth - sorry - really nice name but associate it with awful girl at uni
Lila - quite overused.....could become quite common in the future (the new "sharon")
Laura - alright - though prefer Lauren or Lara
Gretchen - like it, but helps if your daughter is tall, blond and amazonian!!!
Justine - posh girl at boarding school who becomes lesbian (sorry - couldn't resist - but some names just conjur up images!!)
Lalita - too close to lolita - nooooo that's sauteed in wrong sauce!
Asha - Brimful of Asha?
Zorah - sounds like some sort of punishment that comes down from a wrathful god
Nina - ....and the neurons....sorry - getting carried away with word associations here....but I do like this name (but as another poster has pointed out, its a very dainty name, and if you have amazonian tendencies then I would stick with Gretchen instead!

Rachiesparrow · 08/12/2009 14:41

Lumpasmelly - I'm not amazonian, but I'm not exactly dainty either.

Apparently Brimful of Asha is about Asha Bhosle, a legendary bollywood singer, which is ok with me!

Zorah - yeah, going off this now after I read that it means 'place of wasps'.

Thanks for all the opinions. keep 'em coming.

My DD is due soon (having issues with section dates so unable to tell you exactly when - sometime between 17th Dec and 10th Jan!!) and will be called Catherine.

I love Kitty for short. And Katie

I know Katherine would work better for both nicknames but it doesn't look right to me so we're sticking with the C spelling

Cannot wait to meet her!

jellybeans · 08/12/2009 17:06

Rachiesparrow · 08/12/2009 18:03

Goldensnitch - I think I will stick with the C spelling too. I prefer it.

jellybeans, thanks for the overwhelmingly positive response to all my choices! You can't please everyone I guess.
