Not for a baby as such but am reading a historical novel with this name in it and I wondered if anyone knew how it was pronounced?

I'm reading it to myself as Hah wyse but I'm not convinced this is right.

Is it Katherine by Anya Seton? LOVE that book

I love it as well, probably the description of the Hawise in that caused the name to die out!
but this is Shadows and Strongholds by Elizabeth Chadwick, set in medieval times of yore

I'm enjoying it so far.

It was not an uncommon name in days of yore and think (though by no means sure) that other variants on it were Havoisia, Avicia, Avice, Avis. Think they may all be variants on Haduwig (Hedwig on modern German).

On this basis, I think I would pronounce it "hawiss".
