Polly?

Hello All
I love the name Polly as I had a good friend as a child with that name - and its not in any of the 'most popular' lists I have found for the last few years. But I am worried - do people not use it because of Polly Pocket?

My husband thinks it might not be used because of the chemical prefix, eg polystyrene, polyester etc etc. I think thats nonsense.

Are either of us right? Is it a bad name to give a little girl?

Nice name, much under-used, imo.

I know 2 adults with this name, and they're almost always known as Pol by friends and family.

I think it's a bit of a silly name - sweet, but silly.

I know a Polly who is 1. Lovely name.

I don't think Polly pocket is a problem.
Polystyrene etc - Nah. It's not that. It would only be an issue if the abbreviation was used in that context. I know a girl called 'Maya' (May -a ) and noone worries about mayonnaise.
It is underused.

Isn't it short for Elizabeth (bizarrely)?

I prefer it to Molly or Holly. It's a bit quirkier.

I would use it as a nick name for Penelope. You may hate Penelope, (I love it) but Polly only seems quirkier and more interesting than Molly becuase it's rarer.

I'd like knowing that there was a more classic and solid name on the BC.

But as a nn I love Polly.

I think I think it's silly because it rhymes with Dolly...

Oh, and I think 'PJ Harvey' not 'dolly' :-)

I'm not really into that sort of name but agree that it is much much nicer than the holly, molly, lily etc names which seem to 'fit' in the same group

I know a Polina (ukranian heritage) who is often called Polly but can't think of any others!

it's that nice kind of underused that makes it special rather than that oh dear god you can't call a baby THAT kind of underused (i'm so eloquent )

David Baddiel and Morwenna Banks daughter is Dolly. That is just so so SO silly.

Dolly, however, is a BRILLIANT name.

MIL, who is known as Polly (or Pol) is really a Paulina.

I love the name Polly and can't believe it's not more popular. It would be near the top of my list if my friend's daughter wasn't called it. Don't agree you need a more proper name on birth certificate - just don't see the point of that and Polly is a perfectly acceptable name on its own. Is definitely not silly. Polly Pocket woudn't bother me (mind you I'm thinking of calling my baby Kitty and I have Hello Kitty to contend with. Kitty and Polly similar sort of names I think.) and the prefix poly has never crossed my mind before.

I really like Dolly, too. Quite funky. Doll is a cool nickname!

Polly Esther is a big fat no. Polly with a sensible middle name is cute, though I like the suggestion of using it as a nickname for Penelope.

Actually, I think Polly is "short" for Mary. If you put Polly into a family history search it comes back with results for Mary as well.

I quite like it - really wouldn't have gone with our surname or my maiden name though.

I know a very cool 9-year-old Polly. Excellent name IMO.

If you're into folk music (as i am) then Polly isn't a silly name at all; it's traditionally english and historic and wonderful.
