it's nice.
because there aren't many around and of course there's Uma Thurman, that's what i immediately think of.
I suppose it's at risk of being like Demi and people may presume you're a celeb watcher which isn't very cool.
but, it is a nice name.

theagedparent · 14/11/2009 10:29

Lovely name.

gorionine · 14/11/2009 10:32

beautiful! I love short names.

boodleboot · 14/11/2009 10:44

i like it lots... Sherherazade goldsmith has a daughter called Uma....

i also really like Thirza....

birdofthenorth · 14/11/2009 11:45

Like it a lot.

persephoneplum · 14/11/2009 12:29

Absolutely love it... BUT (and it's a big but) it's one of those names which seems to be 'owned' by one person. A lot like Elvis.

loobylu3 · 14/11/2009 13:31

I like it a lot. However, I am half Asian so v familiar with the name and the meaning. I think most others will just associate it with Uma Thurman which may be a little irritating for you. Also, if I heard of a little girl called Uma, I have to admit that I would assume she was from a Hindu family and might be surprised if she wasn't. (It's a bit like Maya which is also a Sanskrit name but now used cross- culturally).

dizzydixies · 14/11/2009 13:44

is it not the name for grandmother in some language? I may be a touch confused with fly addled brain though

MamaLazarou · 14/11/2009 15:35

Lovely name... but people will instantly associate it with Ms Thurman. It's a shame - it would work if there was more than one well-known Uma.

how about Uma's equally exotic middle name: Karuna ?

mathanxiety · 14/11/2009 15:39

You're thinking of Oma, dizzydixies. (German)

dizzydixies · 14/11/2009 15:53

thanks math

DitaVonCheese · 14/11/2009 16:45

Lovely If you want to escape the Thurman link then my niece is Oonagh (slightly different sound to Una, but a bugger to spell for the poor mite )

MaggiePie · 14/11/2009 17:48

Yuck. Really plain and ugly.

Uma Thurman looks a bit strange imo, like she's had a really successful operation to fix a cleft palate, so although I think she's a good actress and not a sleb, a proper actress, she wouldn't be somebody I'd be racing to remind myself of. it that makes sense.

GrendelsMum · 14/11/2009 19:22

A friend's fiancee is called Uma, and she's known as Ums for short. Just thought I'd warn you

kawaiiko · 14/11/2009 20:55

Means "horse" in Japanese. Not that anyone will know that

Sesi · 14/11/2009 21:06

It's a bit hippy dippy but nothing wrong with that imo!

As already mentioned Zac and Sherherazade Goldsmith daughters are called Uma and Thyra. Both nice names.
