I think it is usually Ciaran for Irish spelling, Kieran for anglicised (i before e) because Keir is a different name, (Scottish).

PavlovtheForgetfulCat · 12/11/2009 10:10

LOL, I never get my ie ei the right way round. Perhaps should avoid that completely, would not want to get my own baby's name wrong!

I would prefer the Irish spelling, as I am of irish decent (father). I think it actually looks prettier too, but would not want to spell it inappropriately, not that we have decided on this name yet. But just in case.

That would explain why my brother Keith is ei then, as its a scottish name...

so scottish gaelic would be Keiron?

Scottish Gaelic would NOT be Kieron
The nearest Scottish equivalent would be Keir, I think.
I know it is derived from Gaelic but it's Irish Gaelic and hasn't been a traditional name in Scotland.

PS Google is your friend

I have a Ciaran - but seems to be pretty unusual spelling in UK - everyone wants to spell it

Kieran

haveemailedtoniandguy · 12/11/2009 10:36

Keiran

dizzydixies · 12/11/2009 10:45

Ciaran as DH Irish and I'm Scottish however I'd prefer it spelt

R E U B E N

Pinkjenny · 12/11/2009 10:47

Kieran

MrsFlittersnoop · 12/11/2009 10:54

I have a Ciaran too, but the poor lad - no one EVER spells his name correctly, even family get it wrong and many of his teachers at school can't seem to pronounce it either. He gets called See-ARE-an, and teased about having a girl's name.

Having said that, he's v. proud of his traditional Irish name and wouldn't change it for anything. He was pretty horrified when I told my first choice of name for him was Julian .

Dumbledoresgirl · 12/11/2009 10:56

My ds3's middle name is Ciaran. Annoyingly, one of his friends is Kieran or Kieron (not sure which) so now ds3 thinks that is how his name should be spelt.

ShowOfHands · 12/11/2009 10:56

Kieran. I'm as English as an English thing though.

BunnyLebowski · 12/11/2009 10:57

Ciaran. The proper spelling. Can't stand the anglicised versions. Chavvy.

nickelbabe · 12/11/2009 10:59

the english name is Kieran.
the irish name is ciaron

a scottish equivalent would be keiron, but it's not usual in scotland (as slim and prunerz said: it would be Keir in scottish)

nickelbabe · 12/11/2009 11:00

typo: i meant irish would be ciaran.

it's still early

Prunerz · 12/11/2009 11:01

I have just googled Kieron
All the returns were for people with an Irish surname
I have never seen it in Scotland

MrsFlittersnoop · 12/11/2009 11:14

What Bunny said and with a fada over the second "a".

I've never heard of it as a traditional Scottish name either.

SJisontheway · 12/11/2009 11:20

I think in the UK I would go for Kieran. Ciaran has a fada over the second a and the correct pronounciation is Kier - awn.

NancyBotwin · 12/11/2009 11:21

As others have said, Ciaran or Kieran in Ireland.

I have come across a Keiron or was it Kieron? of Irish descent but they also named one of their ds's Sean John (Irish Mnetters will know why I was at that!) so what would they know!

thumbwitch · 12/11/2009 11:22

I would have said Kieran in England as well.

BunnyLebowski · 12/11/2009 11:48

at Sean John! That's woeful!

PavlovtheForgetfulCat · 12/11/2009 12:56

dizzie we might well still go for Reuben...or possibly one of our other choices.

This name is a headache already and we have not even named him it yet

dizzy and in answer to your Q on the other thread. Not yet...this seems to be the longest pregnancy EVER. He is not even due til wednesday and I feel like he is overdue!!! But at least it gives us some more time to stress about what to call him

OP posts:
Flightattendant · 12/11/2009 12:58

diarmuid i think. or it might be siobhan.

PavlovtheForgetfulCat · 12/11/2009 12:58

But, if we go for Reuben. Do we spell it

Reuben
Rubin
Ruben

Kieran

Or Ciaran if you are Irish. I would once have assumed someone was the Irish spelling but the K one seems to have increased in popularity. All the ones we know are K I think.
