We've got our appointment in the morning but I've gone down with upset stomach and fever. It's the last day we're supposed to do it (i.e. the 42nd day) what will happen if I call to try and postpone???

They automatically call the baby Eric Norman Smith or Sandra Anne Smith depending on the sex.

PlantASeedWatchItGrow · 09/11/2009 19:35

Disenchanted are you serious or am I just really guliable?

PlantASeedWatchItGrow · 09/11/2009 19:36

Disenchanted3 · 09/11/2009 19:37

I'm deadly serious.

RnB · 09/11/2009 19:38

Lifeinagoldfishbowl · 09/11/2009 19:40

Please dear god go -

yours sincerely Sandra Ann Smith

PlantASeedWatchItGrow · 09/11/2009 19:45

Ok, I've googled and can't find anything on it, apart from a possible fine and not being able to claim benefits??

Who picked those names anyway??

Disenchanted3 · 09/11/2009 19:47

Lotkinsgonecurly · 09/11/2009 19:53

They don't do anything. Just send you a reminder letter in a few weeks. Mum is a registrar, asked her when she registered dd. Loving sandra ....smith.

greensnail · 09/11/2009 19:57

I know someone who got an extension as they hadn't decided on names yet. I would just phone up in the morning and explain, am sure it will be fine.

catinthehat2 · 09/11/2009 20:01

Disenchanted -
I understand they change it alphabetically every 10 years to avoid too much duplication at schools. Names are agreed until 2029 according to the HMRC website

1/1/2000 - 31/12/2009 Eric Norman Smith or Sandra Anne Smith

1/1/2010 - 31/12/2019 Frederick Norman Smith or Teresa Anne Smith

1/1/2020 - 31/12/2029 Gareth Norman Smith or Ursula Anne Smith

devilsadvocaat · 09/11/2009 20:04

Disenchanted you have just made me

GrimmaTheNome · 10/11/2009 18:37

I don't know what the rules are now, but somewhat over 90 years ago my MIL wasn't registered in time. This has resulted in her having an 'official birthday' two months after her real one. SHe got her pension late because of this!

MaggieLaVoleuse · 11/11/2009 09:15

NOTHING happens. I'm pretty sure of it.

I knew a girl who had Female where the name should go on her birth cert. To make matters worse, her sur name was fox. Female Fox. Her parents should have been convicted of some sort of negligence for that!! I don't know how long they left it though.. must have been a long, long time. She would be about 40 now. The name they finally came up with was along the lines of Karen too. Very of its time and not at all, ooooh that was worth waiting for!

MillyMollyMoo · 11/11/2009 09:54

They actually inform the local police who come to see that you haven't murdered the baby or that the baby isn't due to be taken into care and you've done a runner, that's what my HV told me, but then we all know how factually correct they tend to be

PfftTheMagicDragon · 11/11/2009 09:55

You have to give it back.

Divster · 11/11/2009 09:59

I think you will find that your HV will be contacted, and your HV will come to talk to you.
