We've picked the name Aaron for our son, but since deciding on it have discovered that people are pronouncing the name in different ways. I wanted to do a quick poll and see how you think it should be said.

All the Aaron's I know pronounce it Ah-run to rhyme with Baron. Air-on sounds very American to me but it's down to you how you decide to pronounce it once he's meets people they will remember.

To rhyme with Baron, unless I know the person is Jewish, in which case I'd assume Air-on.

Technically it should be A-ha-ron which is the Hebrew pronunciation. The pronunciation in England has long been Air on which is equally incorrect but has been standard for many years.

The Aron pronunciation comes from the Biblical Aaron too through other translations not English but was usually spelled differently in England as Aron or Arron, there is no reason why pronouncing Aaron as Aron should be any more incorrect than pronouncing it as Air-on both pronunciations are not the original ones and therefore they are both incorrect but acceptable.
Arran and Arun are different names with different roots

I would assume any Aaron under say 30 nowadays as an Arron unless clarified otherwise. I would clarify with older Aaron's, the Arron pronunciation is much nicer in my view.

A-ron like baron.

Clearly both are acceptable and it's pronounced as the parents wish. However if you choose it you may have to accept that some may pronounce it wrong initially, you just have to cheerfully explain which pronunciation you have picked and that there are two (at least) acceptable pronunciations.

If the OP has a son called Aaron he'll be in Reception class now. This thread was started in 2009.

The English name "Aaron" is sometimes confused with the English name "Aron" which is also derived from the biblical Aaron but through translation routes other than the Church of England (e.g. Scandinavian[11] and Celtic[12] churches) and pronounced /ær?n/ ("a-ran" as in "arrow"). It is further sometimes confused with the names Arran and Aran which are also pronounced /ær?n/ ("a-ran" as in "arrow") but derive from various sources unrelated to the biblical Aaron such as the Scottish Isle of Arran and Irish Aran Islands

As othrs have said, Arran is a completely different (Scottish/Irish) name, surely?
In 2013 - 232 babies names Aaron in Scotland and 106 named Arran.

Aaron..... Air-on. Aar = air.
Biblical pronunciation is Air-on.
Our friends from across the pond seem to feel the need for their own spellings and the pronunciation of some English words.
Hence the adjustment to 'Arron', and... as per usual, we then slavishly imitate their adjustments!

Also have DS Aaron, and we say it like baron without the B.

A few people have tried to say eh-ron, but they stop when they realise we don't call him that!

Where is the place to vote in this poll, so we can see a definite trend.
My Jewish friends where Aaron has its roots, all side with the Air-on pronunciation.
