Aaron - how would you pronounce it?

We've picked the name Aaron for our son, but since deciding on it have discovered that people are pronouncing the name in different ways. I wanted to do a quick poll and see how you think it should be said.

Thanks for your replies. It looks like there's a 50/50 split. We had chosen the spelling Aaron, with the pronunciation as Baron without the B.

Friends and family in Scotland seem to know that's how it is said, but those in England think it's Aaron as in Air-on. We're not sure whether to change the way we wanted to spell it to avoid confusion for the rest of our son's life!

Air-ron. Went to school with about 4. All pronounced that way.

AKMD · 30/10/2009 20:44

My DH is Air-ron. It took me months to say it properly and I still call him Arran sometimes as a tease :D

crokky · 30/10/2009 20:53

air - run

TheFallenMadonna · 30/10/2009 20:55

I would want to say Air-ron, but every child I teach who is called Aaron pronounces it your way.

Annabelsmummie · 30/10/2009 21:02

To me

Aaron -> Air-run
Arun -> Ah-run

So if you want Ah-run, then I'd spell it Arun. That way there can be no confusion imo.

lotspot · 31/10/2009 00:19

I'd say Arun but I know a person with a name pronounced Air-un who spells it Ahron (i think)

Personally i prefer his pronunciation to the way i pronounce Aaron

I think i might have confused myself a bit here

Divatheshopaholic · 31/10/2009 00:21

arronn

lovemybabyboy · 31/10/2009 00:33

Yes I agree with the others who said like Barron.

Tambajam · 31/10/2009 06:31

Rhymes with Sharon.

mumofayla · 31/10/2009 06:42

As before, I would pronounce it rhyming with Sharon. There is a little boy in US programme Lost called Aaron and pronounced this way

bigTillyMint · 31/10/2009 06:47

A boy in DS's class is called Aaron, pronounced Ay-ron

pranma · 31/10/2009 19:39

Airrun as the Biblical prononciation if you want Arran call himm Arran-the double a gives it away it is not not Arrun

TrillianSlasher · 31/10/2009 19:40

Arron. Boy at school called Aaron, pronounced this way.

Not air-ron or ay-ron.

FaintlyMacabre · 31/10/2009 19:54

My Dad's favourite 'joke' surely gives a clue to the pronunciation-
'How do we know that Moses wore a wig?
Because sometimes he was seen with Aaron and sometimes without'.

Having said that, the only Aaron I know is Canadian and pronounces it Arron.

AvengingGerbil · 31/10/2009 19:55

It was Air-on all through my youth. Elvis, for example, was Elvis Air-on Presley.

Double A = Air.

Not quite clear when people stopped knowing this.

TabithaWitches · 31/10/2009 19:58

I know 2, both spelt Aaron and pronounced Arrun. Personally don't like Airon pronunciation, but both equally valid IMO. (And if it was me, no way would I change the spelling, Aaron looks much nicer than Arun or Arran in my view)

Disenchanted3 · 31/10/2009 20:00

Like baron without the B

Disenchanted3 · 31/10/2009 20:01

DHS bro is Aaron and everyone says (b)aron

stakethroughtheheartofgold · 31/10/2009 20:04

elvis's middle name was actually aron - they misspelt (missspelled??) it on his grave stone

iwascyteenagewerewolf · 31/10/2009 20:11

I love all the snottiness on this thread Just use whichever pronunciation and spelling combo you prefer, it's pretty obvious they're interchangeable in the big wide world.

It's a great name, one I'd happily use (as Aaron prn. Arrun) if I didn't have a slightly irritating friend with exactly that combination.

And as for all the people worrying about confusion and having to correct people all the time: I have a very normal, normally spelled name that really couldn't be clearer. I constantly have to spell it out and correct people, constantly. It's just part of life.

mark808 · 16/12/2013 10:32

The correct pronunciation is Air-on. I went to school with 2 boys called Aaron pronounced Air-on. I think over the years the incorrect spelling has been used. If the name wanted is Arun then it should be spelled Arun or Arran or something that pronounces like that. Double A at the start of a word is pronounced Air. This isn't debatable it is the facts but the language evolves over time and as such the majority of people now call their children Aaron and say it Arun. It is incorrect but in today's language appears to now be correct.

Sarahsupermum123 · 28/07/2014 19:20

I went to school with a boy called Aaron (air run) going back 30 yrs lol
When we had my boy we specifically wanted to call him Arron so spelt it that's way. He's now 10 and this debate has come up,boys at his school are called Arron but spelt Aaron to which they tell my boy his name is spelt wrong....I googled it to prove to him that in biblical/correct terms it is pronounced air Ron,Aaron Hebrew brother of Joseph.Arron is a modern name.

ataposaurus · 28/07/2014 21:04

It is most definitely pronounced Air - on (as in Copland). Agree with the joke above about Moses sometimes being seen with Aaron and sometimes not. Lovely name when pronounced correctly, not when pronounced Arran, which should be spelled like that, as in the island.
