Celeste?

Thought I had definitely decided on a name, but am now thinking that Celeste is really lovely and unusual. And I like the fact that it's Barbar's wife... But is it too girly/pretentiously French sounding? (We are not French...)

Reminds me of Babar the elephant.

it's currently on my and dh's shortlist should we ever have a dd as it is very pretty but not too cutesy - can imagine a grown up celeste, whereas lots of girls names just seem to be little girly. we're a bit nervous about it sounding a bit too french - we aren't really into names like amelie and luca which are obvious imports, but we do love celeste so might make an exception.

electra · 27/10/2009 12:49

I think it's a great name but is it not also a contraceptive pill?

InSync · 27/10/2009 12:51

Reminds me of the pill as well

MaggieBruja · 27/10/2009 12:51

Yikes no. Cileste !! was on it for years!

jamandjerusalem · 27/10/2009 13:04

I really like it in theory, but I knew someone with an aunt called Celeste. Because of the local accent here, it came out as 'antie slest' which I always found a little off-putting... About as far away from glamorous Paris as you can get!

mangosTrickyrice · 27/10/2009 13:10

Too close to cileste for me, too - grateful as I am for many years of effective contraception & all...

doubleexpresso · 27/10/2009 13:14

Love it. It's a really great name because you can imagine a baby and an adult called this, unlike a lot of 'cutesy' names. Never heard of the pill with similar name, so that doesn't bother me. Go for it! It's gorgeous.

suwoo · 27/10/2009 13:15

It was on my short list for DC3 who turned out to be a boy. I also liked Camille and Cecily.

My parents live in France so may have got away with a very tenuous link to France.

Vivia · 27/10/2009 13:38

Love it. Celeste and Colette are our favourite names for a future DD.

ButtercupWafflehead · 27/10/2009 13:40

I love it, feminine but not cutesy - perfect!

MRSwereWOOLFhasabroomofherown · 27/10/2009 14:14

Reminds me of Babar. Lovely name and very underused. It has grown on me a lot.
I don't think it would be pretentious if not French. Although the only person I know of who does have a Celeste is French

IControlSandwichMonkey · 27/10/2009 14:17

Aww lovely. Latin for medicinal protector iirc.

mathanxiety · 27/10/2009 15:20

Very nice. Suggest Celine also?

LetThereBeRock · 27/10/2009 17:35

I love Celeste. It's beautiful and works well at any age.

boodleboot · 27/10/2009 21:13

reminds me of the contraceptive pill cileste.....prefer Cecily

mamalovesmojitos · 27/10/2009 21:17

thesecondcocking · 27/10/2009 21:18
