Seriously cute . I can just imagine a bouncing baby with chubby cheeks being called it!

sillysalley · 12/10/2009 23:51

Never heard of it, seems very made up IYWSWIM

AitchTwoToTangOh · 12/10/2009 23:51

doesn't it mean little church or something?

AitchTwoToTangOh · 12/10/2009 23:51

it's a surname, not made up.

Pyrocanthus · 12/10/2009 23:52

It's a Salvation Army chapel to me, I've not heard it used as a name.

Hebrew - House of God, apparently.

Thanks , I was wondering where it came from. I found it in a name book and liked it but there was no meaning or origin.

No, don't call a baby that.

nooka · 13/10/2009 01:19

Made me think of brothels for some reason. I wonder if their is a common root. If you like the sound, then Bethan/Bethany are I think nicer.

CheerfulYank · 13/10/2009 02:08

I'm not terribly fond of it but it's certainly not horrible.

PumpkinsCantDanceTheTango · 13/10/2009 03:04

Theres a line in friends - the one where ross gets his monkey. He gets it from his friend Bethel who rescued it from a research lab. Phoebe says "OMG why would you do what why? ... Why would you name a child bethel?"

greenday · 13/10/2009 04:14

Bethany is the same meaning and its a legit name.

UnrequitedSkink · 13/10/2009 08:00

sweetnitanitro · 13/10/2009 08:02

Bethel is the name for the Jehovah's witnesses HQ.

bellissima · 13/10/2009 09:09

Had a colleague with this surname - explained that it was a Jewish surname which had been around in this country for centuries.

rosieposey · 13/10/2009 09:11

It reminds me of Ethel, which reminds me of Eastenders sorry - Bethany is a cute name though

MrsBadger · 13/10/2009 09:23
