Here is my list, please rank in order of preference 1-4, or rate it out of 10

Monty (Montgomery)
Laurie (Laurence)
Gabriel/Gabe
Reuben

All of these go brilliantly with both our DDs full and shortened name, and our surname.

My DS1 has Montgomery as a middle name and it came a very close 2nd as our choice for first name.
I still really like Monty, but my H now really doesn't!

I love Monty (not Montgomery or Montague.. just Monty) .. but am biased.. 4 day old DS is called Monty

So..

Monty - 10/10
Gabriel - 8/10
Laurie - 6/10
Reuben - 2/10 (I have issues with Reuben's I have known and disliked - not really the name..)

sparkle09 · 10/10/2009 02:34

i love reuben!, and as a youngster he can be called roo, with a reference to winnie the pooh! couldnt get much better! xxx

Tortington · 10/10/2009 03:17

gabriel will be 'gay' at school = upto you whether you want to saddle him witht hat one

reuben - erm....no - hasn't every one got one?

laurie - ok

monty - ok

all a bit try hard imo

nooka · 10/10/2009 05:51

My cousin Gabriel has never been known as Gay, but then he is fairly stunning (and was very angelic as a little boy too).

I think I'd choose:

Laurence (Laurie)
then Gabriel / Reuben (my only caveat would be that Reuben seems quite popular, although my children are junior age now I'm in no way in the baby loop)
and then Monty, which I think of as being either try hard posh or a pet name (I've known both cat/dog Montys) and really don't lke very much.

PavlovtheForgetfulCat · 10/10/2009 07:53

Custardo - lol at him being called Gay! We can all think of insulting names for most names to be honest and I am not entirely sure that would put me off calling him it, I cannot say I had even considered that!

Reuben - i have heard its a bit popular these days too, but I do not know any down here, and there are none at DDs nursery that I can tell. And, I am not really that bothered if it is a little popular, but I do not want ultra popular, such as Oliver, or Jack or that kind of name.

Monty - I was anticipating Monty as being absolutely panned, so a couple of 'trying to hards' and 'too posh' is fine with me . I do not like Montague at all, and I am not keen on Montgomery, but DH has this insistence that you cannot have a shortened name as the main name. He will not budge on this, although we have talked and talked and talked about it. I did think it was possibly a bit posh, but I just really like like it. It fits. The name sounds grand with our surname, but not ott.

Sparkle DH likes the shortened Rue too (or Roo). Not sure I do, but we shall see!

Gabriel and Reuben are my favourites out of those - Though Lawerence was my house at sixth form so that's why I'm not particularly fond!

Heated · 10/10/2009 17:15
