What is Tess short for?

Thats it really I've started to really like this name but feel it is a nickname and would prefer to have a proper name on the birth certificate. Haven't even run it past dh yet, thought I'd see what the mumsnet consensus was!

theresa

I know a Theresa who is Tess.
It is a lovely name, though I would be wary of giving a girl the name of a tragic heroine.

giddykipper · 05/10/2009 20:45

Teresa I think.

Ewe · 05/10/2009 20:45

My friend Tess is Tessa.

Jux · 05/10/2009 20:45

Teresa usually (or Theresa as Nellie says; and Nellie is short for.....)

hobbgoblin · 05/10/2009 20:47

contessa

CravingOlives · 05/10/2009 20:53

KEAWYED · 05/10/2009 20:59

helips · 05/10/2009 21:00

If DD3 is a girl she'll be Tess, but just Tess, no longer version...

Bathsheba · 06/10/2009 08:25

Sorry, if DC3 is a girl....

weaselbudge · 06/10/2009 09:30

If DC2 is a girl she will be named Tess/Tessie and it will be short for Tessa (named after my MIL). But won't use Tessa - just on birth certificate.
what about Therese (french version)?

Bathsheba · 06/10/2009 09:53

..oh and if anyone asks (if DC3 is a girl and ends up being calledTess) I'm telling them its short of Old Testament.

buzzybee · 08/10/2009 10:50

My DD's nursery teacher is called Vanessa but all the children call her Tessa or Tess!
Maybe Estella?

MaryAmericanSmooth · 08/10/2009 10:51

my cousin is a Theresa and is called Tess

comeonbishbosh · 08/10/2009 13:11

My sister is Tessa but in adult life is called Tess. I think it's a great name!

smackapacka · 08/10/2009 20:18

My friend is called Tessa. It's a sensible 'work' name, but her mates/DP call her Tess. I know alot of people assume it is short for Theresa though. She really likes the fact that it isn't 'common/popular', but not a 'curiosity'. She's early 30s BTW.

helips · 08/10/2009 20:47

I really like Tessa but Im worried it sounds like a nickname rather than a proper name iyswim. Will mull it over, still have 4 weeks to go and you never know, dc might be a boy anyway!

Lovely, short for Theresa. BUT...Tess of the d'Urbervilles is such a sad book and the name will ALWAYS be associated with that.

victoriascrumptious · 12/10/2009 21:10

GORGEOUS!

5inthetomb · 12/10/2009 21:13

I have a friend called Teresita, and she gets Tess sometimes.

feetheart · 12/10/2009 21:22

We have a Tessa. Not short for anything and at the moment, at 6.8, she LOVES her name. Major advantage, apart from it being a lovely name, is that we have NEVER met another little girl called Tessa - a few old ladies and one dog but no children
