Amity
Beautiful name, very simple, very rare.
I have 4 Ds and am finished so you can have it x

tryingtobemarypoppins · 19/09/2009 13:25

Amity is lovely! What does it mean?

I know of at least 3 local babies (very small town) named Evie this year. I think you will be glad at some point that you didn't use it if you choose something else.

We have an Eva, and apart the midwife who delivered her, I have never meet another one. Evie is very popular though - have meet loads

LittleMissNosey · 19/09/2009 17:25

meet met doh!

pranma · 19/09/2009 17:52

Matilda?Tilly Willy ????????????????????

pranma · 19/09/2009 17:54

Amity means loving friendship but watch out for connections with that book/film The Amityville Horror
Amity Will Horror -some kid will do that I'm afraid

pranma · 19/09/2009 17:55

Verity=truth
Felicity=joy
Constance[Connie]is lovely and goes well with Williams

Hulababy · 19/09/2009 18:20

I am obviously very biased towards Molly, although still love the Mollie spelling instead.

I don't like Polly.

Docbunches · 19/09/2009 18:22

There are some lovely names mentioned on here, but I personally love either Eva or Ava - in preference to Evie which seems to be mega-popular at the moment.

Amity is nice, but I immediately thought of Jaws AND Amityville Horror!

TokenFemale · 19/09/2009 21:50

Just been reminded of another lovely, little-used name: Posie

justbeenforapromenade · 20/09/2009 01:32

Evie is pretty, but so overused, I believe. I prefer names without the 'ie' ending but with the option to add it as a nickname as I think the 'ie' endings are very 'early noughties'

Daphne is lovely, though.
What about...
Delphi
Elfie - used to be a favourite of mine
Elvie
Effie (short for Euphemia)?

My favourite names in the world are:

Violet and Pearl

SofiaAmes · 20/09/2009 01:42

Haven't read the other posts, but I think you should just use it. My cousin used my name that I had picked from childhood for my 1st daughter (she had her dd 1 year before mine). I just used it too. Ironically it was our grandmother's name, but my cousin spelled it wrong. In the end a third cousin used a similar version of the same name too. We all use different nicknames (just naturally happened that way) so there's no confusion.

cookielove · 20/09/2009 12:54

me again still nothing to do with the actual point, but is the other child a boy, and if it is, is it possible to say his name?

More to the point, i love the name evie and would have no issues calling my child it, even if my friend had used that name

tryingtobemarypoppins · 20/09/2009 20:53

Your worrying me cookielove!!

cookielove · 20/09/2009 21:21

ha ha sorry, my boss went into hospital and we haven't heard anything for days and her first choice was Evie for a girl, and she has a few friends that are pregnant, and you never know it is a small world

womble1 · 20/09/2009 21:30

Well I think we are safe as she is a SAHM!

cookielove · 20/09/2009 21:35

safe from my curiousity, Phew lucky escape there,

PandaEis · 20/09/2009 22:08

i have a friend who did this when we were both preg with our DDs
she said she couldnt think of any nice girls names and asked what i had picked so i told her and me and DH had settled on the name so it was THE name IYSWIM so she had her DD 10 days before i had mine and lo and behold her DD was named the name we had chosen i think it is such a mena thing to do especially if you had discussed it and you made it clear it was your top name however, as scottishmummy has pointed out, names are not excusive and you will certainly meet others with the same name so if you have other names on a list discunt the name you had at the top what was second down??
and FWIW my DD much suits her name now and it was a spur of the moment choice 2 mins after birth she is very much 'her name' and i am very glad to have not used the name we had originally picked
xx ei xx

PandaEis · 20/09/2009 22:10

whoops a few typos in there
i meant discOunt not discunt

skyward · 21/09/2009 07:23

I think you should use it anyway. We're in a similar situation - DH's stepsister likes Verity and it's our top choice too. We're due first but she's finding out what she's having soon and we're having a surprise. Your friend could move away and in 10 years time you might not be in touch anymore and you'll regret not using it. There'll always be other children with the same name so if you like it, go for it. x

abra1d · 21/09/2009 07:39

'Eloise - Nice but will be called Louise '

This has never once happened to my 12-year old.

MaggieBeauLeo · 21/09/2009 09:45

I agree with pp, If I 'heard' Louise nwo, I think I'd assume that I'd misheard and it was actually Eloise.

fanjolina · 21/09/2009 11:59

womble1, are you the OP?

if so, I have more sympathy from your friend, given that your other thread indicates that you do not even know the sex of your baby yet.

If you were late pregnancy and definitely knew you were having a girl, then it would be a fairly thing of your friend to do.

But given that you may find out at your 20 week scan that it is a boy, then I can see why your friend might have been inclined to use the name. She liked it and there is only a 50% chance of you having a girl and being able to use the name anyway.
