Laurence or Laurent?

I don't know if it's the hormonal madness but this name is growing on me (with a 'u' not a 'w')

question- a. will he hate me?

b. which spelling is best? I think I prefer the first one but the fact that in France this is the girl's version of the name may be a bit of an issue...

opinions please thanks

I love Laurence, and don't mind Lawrence either. Not too mad on Laurent though.

PestoSurfMonster · 14/09/2009 10:09

unless you're French of course!

jellybeans · 14/09/2009 10:21

I really don't like any, sorry.

Momdeguerre · 14/09/2009 10:22

I much prefer Lawrence.

Not keen on Laurent or Laurence without the W.

brimfull · 14/09/2009 10:23

My db is Laurence and I have a friend Lawrence.

I love it

Are you French?
If not, then Lawrence/Laurence.
(not that I like the English version either, I'm afraid.)

crumpette · 14/09/2009 10:31

Not French but go there quite a bit didn't know if it would be mean to call a boy a girl's name

I'm not mega keen on Laurence but like nicknames that can go with it like Laurie and Lars (?) and Lorenzo... also I doubt a Laurence/Lawrence would be in a class with lots of other Laurences....

Hmm maybe it will be James after all!!

Lawrence is a lovely name (and much nicer and unique than James).

I'd go for the Lawrence spelling as Laurence is indeed the feminine version of Laurent.

norktasticninja · 14/09/2009 11:50

I prefer Laurence to Lawrence myself. I'm not mad about Laurent but it could be a grower...

There's a boy at DD's nursery called Florent which I quite like. Not sure if it would work in the UK though.

hulabula · 14/09/2009 11:51

Laurent - masculine
Laurence - feminine

So, I'd go for Lawrence, unless you're French and you could call him Laurent (or Florent).

rachel1970 · 14/09/2009 12:08

I love Lawrence!

Laurent only if you're French imo.

Tortington · 14/09/2009 12:09

Laurant - is a vampire!

crumpette · 14/09/2009 12:15

Oooh thanks , I am liking Florent....
now.. how to persuade DP...

Am sort of thinking that Laurent would be mispronounced in the UK.. hmm so general consensus is that Laurence is a bit too girly, and if used at all should be with a 'w'?
