I thought for a moment this was a thread inviting opinions on the name Zeitgeist. I think it's very nice, very..of the moment.

Nah, the poor wee thing would be nicknamed Zitghost.

I've never really cared about name popularity but both my DC's names are in the top tens and now I feel boring

hellokitty22 · 09/09/2009 10:44

I wonder if we can get a list of all the 26,815 boys names that were given last year. Or at least the top 1000?

qumquat · 11/09/2009 18:06

It's great to see the percentages, makes you realise that 'common' names aren't really that common at all!

MamaLazarou · 12/09/2009 09:48

Pity the poor fuckers named 'Finlie'.

MaggieVirgoOn · 12/09/2009 10:48

Zeitgeist, always on the pulse. I like it

what do all those percentages mean?

That 0.37% of girls born have that name..?

MaggieVirgoOn · 12/09/2009 10:51

It's interesting that even if your child's name is say Jack, the most popular name, only 2.2 (!) out of a hundred children would have that name. And there are only 30 in a class, so he might still be the only one in his class of 30 ish which would be 15 boys (approx).

For my child's class that holds up. There is one Jack.

thell · 14/09/2009 01:36

...and there'd be one in every year group too, as the name's been at the top for about 15 years!

CheerfulYank · 14/09/2009 01:50

I love the name Jack! But our last name is Brick, and Jack Brick is a bit odd isn't it. DS is on there.

seeker · 14/09/2009 05:21

13 years ago when my dd was born, people said "Oh how lovely!" How unusual" "Is it a family name?" One person even assumed we were religious and were thanking God for her with her name ~ (we were very old first time parents.

Her name is Grace!

MamaLazarou · 14/09/2009 07:24

I am jealous of your surname, CheerfulYank - swoonsome Paul Newman's name in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof!

MaggieBeauLeo · 14/09/2009 09:49

Bet that was a trick sur name to match with. I like Redmond Brick. Red Brick

Boobz · 14/09/2009 11:22

Not sure why it matters, but DD's name is not on there at all and isn't a made up name, so am pretty pleased she is "unusal" for the moment.

Of course it will be #1 in 5 years time now I have said that.

justbeenforapromenade · 14/09/2009 13:02

Funny, a few years ago Ruby and Lily were so offbeat and unusual - now look at them - my name is there too and when I was born it was so unusual. I hope Violet doesn't go the same route. I avoid all such names like the plague - nothing in the top 200 please!!

tammy234 · 14/09/2009 13:09

Neither my dd's or ds's name are on the list of 100 most popular names. I'd be interested to see longer lists, including the top 500 or top 1000 names (or all 26,000 boys names).

MissClavel · 14/09/2009 13:10

These are interesting, but I would love to see the bottom 50.

CheerfulYank · 17/09/2009 01:16

Thanks, mamalazarou. Paul Newman in COAHTR is my number one mmmmmmm so... I was quite happy to marry DH and take the name.

Yes, maggie, it was tricky. No Red, Scarlett, Rusty
