Why do siblings names have to 'go' together?

What am I missing here? When I said my name choices at work, the girls I work with instantly said yeay or nay, for which ones went with my son?s name!

I don't get it. Seems your name is only said with your siblings names for really a pretty short part of your life, hoping you live a long life! And mainly your name stands alone.

What if you marry someone and your names don't go?

Is it just so it flows nicely off the tongue for the parents? Because I don't see that as a very good way to name someone!

I think my children's names go together, and that mattered to me.

Margot and Kayden would have raised eyebrows.

Margot and Richie - people say oh they go togehter (both fuckin' 'orrible lol)

ps, I know sisters and one has a beautiful unusual name, and the other was Jenny. Which is imo also very pretty but it was not at all unusual. People SAID to her a coupleof times, oh you got the plain name.

just discovered this thread and i like it! i'm an only child, but my parents names strangely go with each other. and mine goes with my fiances.

I don't think sibling names have to go together at all, and never understand it when I see people talking about it on MN! My sister and I have similar(ish)-sounding names and our mum was always calling us by each other's name.

I think they have to sound OK together-for example I would avoid something like Jenny and Penny. Hilda, Elsie and Tallulah is a strange combination. I wouldn't have Lily and Rose together-I think you don't want to get onto a theme. I avoided the same initial because they won't know who the post is for when older.

Yep the post thing is worth remembering, my husband and his dad have the same intials and they always had the problem of not knowing who the post was for. Particularly in my dh's late teen years wen he was getting official type letters, they were always opening each others post.

I don't think names have to necessarily "go" together but you do have to be careful... my friend who has a son called Sam recently caled her new daughter Ella without realising what that sounded like together!! Ha ha!

I think it has a lot to do with people who like one sort of name will usually like another name which is similar(not in sound but in type)iyswim. So a person who likes say William will probably like the name Harry. Or someone who likes Jessica will probably like the name Sophie. Whereas someone who likes the name Sophie might not automatically like the name Yolander.

The same applies with fashion someone who goes for striking clothes and statement haircuts might not usually dress from head to foot in beige.
