Baby name shortlist

I am only just pregnant and have a long way to go yet but as its now "official" I thought I would draw up a short list of names. We already have a ds named Finlay.

Girls:
Annabel, Aoife, Emmeline, Eliza, Francesca, Isabella, Matilda, Olivia, Polly, Tabitha.

Boys:

Archie, Angus, Edmund, Felix, Gregory, Harry, Louis, Oliver, Rory, Tobias.

I know that some of them are quite popular but I'm not too fussed about that.

What is the Mumsnet verdict?

SoupDragon · 13/08/2009 18:28

I'm not at all keen on Archie, Annabel, Emmeline or Polly but there aren't any dreadful ones in the list

GoldenSnitch · 13/08/2009 18:28

I would avoid Isabella and Olivia - they've been extremely popular over the past couple of years and there are loads of them.

weaselbudge · 13/08/2009 18:49

I am also toying with Matilda but previous mumsnet verdict seems to be that it is now quite popular - love it though. All your girls names are quite "posh" (which I love) but I would be interested to know whether you plan to use any shortened names eg I like Annabel shortened to Annie but hate Francesca shortened to Frankie or Isabella shortened to Izzie ....

Boys - my faves are harry, oliver and felix. I really don't like edmund (although love Ted!)

Tillyscoutsmum · 13/08/2009 19:43

I love Eliza, Matilda and Tabitha on your list and Angus, Archie and Tobias.

DD is a Matilda and I don't know of any others in rl yet (although know of a couple on here)

pointydog · 13/08/2009 19:47

Annabel - I don't like it at all, frou frou Aoife - not keen, don't like the sound Emmeline - ok
Eliza - ok
Francesca - ok, much prefer Frances
Isabella - ok, much prefer Isabel
Matilda - ok
Olivia - don't like this one
Polly - oh no
Tabitha - no

Archie - no. It's a bit of a comedy name Angus - I like it and I like Gus
Edmund - hmm, not really but I love the nickname Ed/Eddie
Felix - no
Gregory - no
Harry - ok
Louis - like it, lovely sound
Oliver - no, wet
Rory - quite like it
Tobias - no, wet

Hulababy · 13/08/2009 19:54

Girls:
Annabel - classic, pretty, quite popular
Aoife - not keen, will spend forever spelling it for people or telling them how to pronounce
Emmeline - OK
Eliza - classic, quite like although I'd be more likely to have Elisabeth as full name
Francesca - classic, a bit harsh sounding for me
Isabella - quite popular, quite nice
Matilda - love this name, getting popular, love Tilly as nn
Olivia - lovely name, quite popular
Polly OK
Tabitha - not keen

Boys:

Archie - quite like, but not sure I would use as I prefer full names and don't like Archibold
Angus - not keen
Edmund - class, traditional, prefer Edward though
Felix - not keen, reminds me of a cat
Gregory - npot keen
Harry - like this, don't like Harold though so would have to be just Harry, very popular
Louis - not keen
Oliver - really like this, classic
Rory - not keen
Tobias - quite like this

MaggieBelleVirgo · 13/08/2009 20:00

Annabel - love it. Loads of nick names and much prettier than Isabel which is more pop imo

Aoife - lovely but prefer Eva

Emmeline - ok, bit fussy. Emilia or Emily much better.
Eliza - lovely, classic, really like it.
Francesca - bit harsh somehow
Isabella - ok but there are loads.
Matilda - like it, don't love it
Olivia - lovely, popular but gorgeous
Polly -really like this, prefer it so much to Molly. HOpe it never becomes as popular.
Tabitha - not keen, it's not dreadful but I don't like it..

Boys:

Archie - love it, I prefer Richie, it's a bit les of the moment and a bit more classic
Angus - love it, also love Fergus
Edmund - really like this
Felix - Like it.
Gregory - like this
Harry - not keen, and there are loads
Louis - love it, also like Leo
Oliver - no, too feminine sounding imo
Rory - love it!
Tobias - quite like it, prefer Toby though..

You have similar taste to me. What do you think of Juliet? Marcus? Dominic?

thedollshouse · 13/08/2009 20:01

Thanks for your comments everyone. Weaselbudge, I probably wouldn't shorten Annabel on an everyday basis but I quite like Anna so would use that occasionly. I really like Izzy as a nn for Isabella and Livvy for Olivia.

Pointydog, why the "oh no" for Polly? Do you think it sounds too twee? As this is dh's reservation.

I will will wait until my 12 week scan (fingers crossed) and then see if I can cross some off the list. Pleased to see that on the whole they seem quite popular.

Maggie, I like Juliet, Marcus and Dominic too! I may have to add to my list of 10!

MaggieBelleVirgo · 13/08/2009 20:05

Pointydog has 'butch' taste in girls names, lol!

MrsMattie · 13/08/2009 20:07

I really like Aoife, Emmeline, Eliza & Polly.

Louis is the only one of your boy's names that I love.

pointydog · 13/08/2009 23:14

Re Polly too twee - yes, deffo

pointydog · 13/08/2009 23:14

I like Mark a lot. Not MArcus. I don't like the frilly bits, y'see.

eightisseventoomany · 14/08/2009 11:23

There were no Olivers that I knew when I named our ds Ollie ....now there are loads !!!!
Still love the name...and suits him !! took us 6 weeks after his birth to finally decide on Oliver

expecting twins (boy/girl)
I love the name Heidi for a girl

Also shortlisted :-
Mia
Ava
Matilda
Maddison
Emme
Felicity
Bryianna
Neve
Thea
Scout and Zara

struggling with ideas for boys...as already have 4...so used up my favs already !!

eightisseventoomany · 14/08/2009 13:21

Do love the older boys names..:-
Walter / Wilbur
Monty
Wyatt
Aaron
Finn
Tobi
Harrison
Kit ?
Fred
Wilfred
etc etc...
going with lots of names starting w ..as surname starts w...thought it had nice ring to it.. ?

BarbieLovesKen · 14/08/2009 17:19

Annabel, - oh lovely.

Aoife, dont like it - sorry - very boring - million of them (my age) around here.

Emmeline, - niceish although, always reminds me of that character in Anne of Green Gables who what perfectly nice but had absolutely no personality. Wouldnt be mad about it.

Eliza, - ok.

Francesca, very pretty.

Isabella, - absolutely gorgeous - could call her "belle"

Matilda, I dont like it. sorry.

Olivia, ok. bit boring.

Polly, oh dear. no!!. cutsie and all that but a bit silly imoo.

Tabitha. beautiful.

Boys:

Archie - adorable.

Angus - sorry, isnt this a breed of cow???

Edmund - no. way.

Felix - meow....

Gregory - dont like it.

Harry - really lovely.

Louis - would be worried about Louie - which I hate.

Oliver - gorgeous.

Rory - sorry - have always just hated the sound of this name. Think its very harsh or something. dont like it.

Tobias - ok.

BarbieLovesKen · 14/08/2009 17:20

Mumsylady - just to say think Maddison is absolutely beautiful

nappyaddict · 14/08/2009 17:56

Girls:
I like Aoife, Emmeline, Eliza, Polly and Tabitha. I like Anabella but not Annabel.

Boys:

I like Archie (Archibald), Angus, Edmund, Felix, Gregory, Rory, Tobias. I also like Edwin, Edgar, Edbert and Edison.

mathanxiety · 14/08/2009 18:07

Unless you want to start an F trend in your family, I would avoid the F names. Everything else sounds lovely, except Archie and Gregory, which tends to sound awful if your DS can't say his Rs. Polly is a bit twee.

eightisseventoomany · 14/08/2009 21:51

Also....for boys am thinking :

Ted (rather than teddy)
but not sure what formal names can be shortened to Ted ?? other than Edward...already know lots of Eddies !!

Frankie ?
Albert....can be shortened to Albie ?
unsure about Vin ??!!??
Still like Aaron too.

Already have 4 boys :
Alfie (Officially Alfred)
Ollie (Oliver)
Joe (Jordan)
and William (Liam)

Still undecided for our DD also...
and considering still:

Heidi
Evie
Neve
Meredith
Isla

this is soooo hard.....DH doesnt like some of my names (so not included here) but hes not coming up with many helpful suggestions !!

nappyaddict · 15/08/2009 12:18

Ted - I actually prefer Teddy but would use Theodore, Theobald, Edwin, Edmund, Edbert, Edgar or Edison as an official name.

Frankie - I like this. You could use Francis, Francisco, Francesco or Franklin as an official name.

Albert....can be shortened to Albie? Love it

Vin - sounds unfinished. I prefer Vinnie which can be short for Calvin, Alvin, Melvin, Kelvin, Kevin, Vincent, Vinson, Vinton and basically any other name you can think ending in Vin.

Still like Aaron too - I don't like this one. Just that bit too popular for me.

For the girls I like Heidi, Eva or Evelyn but not Evie, Meredith and Isla

eightisseventoomany · 15/08/2009 16:38

Thanks Nappyaddict....

Have spent sooo many hours thinking this over.....
Im sure when they make their appearance....we'll know what suits them best ?.....hopefully

Have you still got the 1 son ? or are you expecting more ??

hence going through these baby names ??

TiggyR · 15/08/2009 21:16

I really like all your names actually, amny of them are ones that have appeared on my shortlists for 3 kids, though some have gone on to be a bit too over-used. I love Mathilda and Tabitha. Have no idea whether or not they are common - my youngest is 10 so I'm a tad out of touch!

Louis and Harry very common, Archie and Angus lovely (though they were both on my list 10 years ago - so a bit common now? Esp. Archie)

Gregory lovely, and Rory perfect. (DS1's name - he's nearly 17 and I still love it!)
